Porting from O2 to O2 - best procedure is?

I am out of my contract period with O2. They won't do the upgrade I
want :-(

I'd like to keep my number.

A couple of months ago they suggested I transfer to PAYG and then back
in to a new contract - I got a PAC code but didn't do it - but I want to
get a new phone/contract for birthday on Oct 8.

So, if I get the PAC code in early Sep and port to O2 PAYG say Sep 30,
can I then transfer the number into a new O2 contract if I take it out
on,say, Oct 6 on a new O2 deal ?

Or is there a minimum time to be on PAYG contract before porting out ?

Would it be easier to go through another provider for the PAYG period -
if so which ?

Thanks for any advice

Your mistake here is that you are not porting out, only migrating inside O2.
You will have to port to another non O2 provider.

OTOH it should be possible to get someone who is not a rule stricken, brain
damaged, jobsworth at O2 to do what you want.

O2 keenness for business has been amply demonstrated. Why not just go to
Voda and stay there?

Why not find another supplier that does the upgrade (what is it you're
after?) you want. Phone O2, tell them you want to cancel and move to
the <other supplier>. Tell them the deal you've seen. They'll almost
certainly make you an offer.
Once you get the new phone/deal/contract you can transfer your old
number to your new handset.

If they _really_ can't/won't accommodate you, just get your PAC from
O2 and move to the supplier you found above. It's quite simple to do.

Best procedure IMO is to get PAC code from o2 - PAC is valid for 30
days.

Ring Virgin between, say, days 1 to 21 (means you will port between day
8 and 28).

On day 31, you are entitled to a new PAC code (from Virgin).

Be aware that with T-Mobile and Orange, you do not need to port in at
the beginning of the contract, but with o2 and Vodafone, you may well
have to port at the same time as starting a new contract.

Fraid not - spend isn't high enough they say - spoke to 3 different
droids on it - will try again though.

It's a Samsung D900 BTW - get it for free on the £19/mo contract which
is fine for me.

I have been told by a couple of folks that you can do this with O2's
online tariffs - i.e. you can migrate an O2 PAYG number to a new online
contract.

Will check with them though
