I am currently running Opera Mini (the Java based web browser for
mobile phones) on a Nokia N80 3G phone on Orange Pay As You Go and have
just noticed something strange. I usually have an OrangeWorld Extra
GPRS data bundle active on my account but for the past few days Orange
have been making extra deductions from my PAYG credit whenever Opera is
used to access the Internet - that is, instead of deducting the amount
of data used from my pre-paid GPRS data bundle they are charging me
separately for data transferred via the Opera browser.

This separate charging has only begun during the past few days. No
settings have been changed on the phone although I did switch
temporarily from my normal Orange Internet gateway to the Orange GPRS
WAP gateway, this made no difference - extra charging still occurred.
Up until these extra charges began the cost of all data being
transferred by Opera was deducted from the Extras bundle as normal.

Interestingly, I called Orange Customer Services and asked why extra
payments were being deducted from my credit and I was told the charges
were made in respect of international roaming! I explained that I was
actually located in the UK at which point they consulted a trouble
shooting guide and suggested a firmware bug in the N80 was responsible
    for the charging error.

My question is this: is anyone aware of a recent change in Orange terms
and conditions for use of the OrangeWorld Extras bundle or has anyone
    else experienced a similar problem?

I will contact Orange technical support later today to check their
    position on this.

One possibility (and I have read the full message)....
Could you have used up your Orange World allowance for the month, and
therefore getting charged for what you've used over your monthly
    limit.

Am experiencing something at other end of spectrum, on Orange PAYG too,
but since last week when using Opera I get "No working network
connection found". Normal WAP browsing works and also using the inbuilt
'html' browser are all fine. Only connections when via Opera are
affected. I wondered if it was something to do with Orange launching
their own 'browser' which was MiniOpera anyway but somehow they were
restricting access to only the Orange version of Opera

They asked me to trial this version of the browser. I was not please to
see they charged me £3 to download a copy. There was no warning that
    would happen.

That is a very sensible suggestion, however this is not the case. My
OrangeWorld bundle is only half used - whenever a balance check is
performed on the phone Orange reports that there is over £7 of
OrangeWorld Extras credit remaining on the account.

Since first posting I have also noticed a few other things. The extra
charges being made are disproportionate to the amount of data being
used - that is they are charging at the rate of about £6.40 per
megabyte instead of the normal rate of £4. Also, it is not just Opera
that is incurring the extra charges, it appears that any 3rd party
application installed on the phone which accessess the internet is
    resulting in extra charges.

    Thanks for your replies.

I have just spoken with Orange. Managed to speak indirectly with an
Orange Data specialist. I have been informed that there is actually a
problem with the Orange network at the moment whereby Pay As You Go
customers (not sure if this affects Pay Monthly customers) may have
roaming charges incorrectly applied to their accounts. It appears the
charges occur whenever a phone connects to the internet via an
application other than a standard WAP browser connecting via the Orange
GPRS WAP gateway - in my case I have been charged for using Opera Mini
    and Mobizines (Java program).

I am not sure if this problem is only affecting Nokia N80 users or if
it affects users of all makes of phone.

It is quite possible that many customers are actually being charged for
roaming without being aware of this. The charges occur after each
internet access session and can quite easily go unnoticed as many users
are unaware of the exact amounts of data they are transferring during
any given session or the Orange standard data charging rates. If you
have an Orangeworld data bundle active on your account and make use of
the internet as described above you may find that you are still charged
separately as roaming falls outside of the T&Cs for OrangeWorld Extras.

For reference the Orange standard charge for data is £4 per megabyte
(MB) which is equivalent to 0.39 pence per kilobyte (KB). You can
calculate exactly what you are being charged if you have access to a
GPRS data counter in your mobile phone (most Nokia phones do). The
roaming charges rate appears to be approximately £6.35 per megabyte
(MB) or 0.62 pence per kilobyte (KB).

Apparently Orange are fully aware of this problem and it is a
prioritised fault. They were also kind enough to refund all money
    incorrectly deducted from my account.

I'm seeing this too using a Nokia 6230 on PAYG.

No, I'm having the same problem with the Orange version. An email to
the trials email address asking for their advice has so far gone
unanswered. I've deleted and re-installed both versions several times
and have now given up and won't waste any more time or money trying to
    get either version working.

Had intermittent not being able to connect for the last few days on my pay
monthly account. Will check my bill very carefully on September 1st when
it's due to be made up!

After buying a £1 browse all day extra, I have been charged.

On phoning Orange Customer Services I was told there is a problem with
their system and everyone will be refunded if they call.
