    Hi,
Is there a way to change the IMEI number on a nokia 6230i?
Got it back after I handed it in as no-one claimed it and it looks a
cool little phone, would do great as a spare, just it's been barred
    from UK networks.
Had a wee look on google most looked out of date, conflicting views
    etc.
Anyone here know? Or any suggestions?
Any good to sell as spares if I can't use it?

Thnaks to anyone who can help!

    Not legally, no.

    Then it's useless.

Possibly, but you're not going to be able to use it.

    Ta for the reply,
I am aware its illegal to chnage it, but if it is possible to chnage it
    would it then work?
I have a broken mobile here, could I use the iMEI from that?
Could someone maybe point me in the right direction so I could change
    it?
I'm not going to sell the phone, just would be handy for myself to use.

You need very expensive specialist hardware, a PC with certain expensive
software, a new IC for the phone, and some skill with a soldering iron.
Basically, it's much cheaper to just buy another one.

    Yes.

Then sell it to someone in Africa (I'm sure there will be several people in
Nigeria who will be keen to take you to the cleaners..... erm.... take it
off your hands) or Asia or strip it for parts.

Yes, they can be changed, but you'll need access to a new UEM chip, the
facilities for programming the chip, and some serious skills with a solder
rework station. On top of that, you'll need a cork for when Mr Plod knocks
on the door and hands you a five year stretch in a narrow cell with a
cheerful chap who goes by the name of Bubba. On top of that, you'd be
    facing a potentially unlimited fine.

    > Any good to sell as spares if I can't use it?

Much better idea than tinkering with the IMEI. Seriously, I really can't
understand anyone risking the possible penalties for something like this.

This is interesting though... I take it legally as the owner has forfeited
entitlement to the phone, then the new owner is the OP? How would the
    networks look at this?

I would personally speak to all networks concerned, and include police
contact numbers. It should be possible to have it unbarred if it's no longer
    considered stolen.

I don't think he/she nicked it. Even if they did, without police input, the
handset wont get barred. So if it's possible to prove he/she got the phone
back after handing it in ages ago, then fair do's.

Of course, he/she could have stolen it, handed it in, only to know that a
few months down the line it would be theres, and could potentially get it
unbarred. That's the main reason I suspect the networks wont do it.

Let's get this straight - you are asking for someone to tell you how to
    break the law..?

Well someone may, but it won't be me.

I suppose you could ask the networks if they'd unblock it for you, as you
will be able to provide them proof that you came by the phone legally,
but I wouldn't hold my breath.

If the phone was insured, then it is the property of the insurance company
concerned. Otherwise it might be possible to persuade the networks to
unbar it, but as their primary interest is getting you to buy a new highly
subsidised phone, I wouldn't hold my breath.

Call me a cynic but I rather suspect the main reason the networks won't do
it is that their primary interest is getting you to buy a new highly
subsidised phone tied to an increasingly long (18 month to 2 year)
    contract.

If it was the subject of an insurance claim then it now belongs to the
    insurance company.

The network would be able to re-unite it with it's previous owner, but
they won't remove it from the blacklist.

But the insurance compnay havnt claimed it back have they? It was handed in
(im assuming to the police) and no one has come forward to claim it. If this
is the case the phone is now, i beleive, legally the OP not the insurance
    co.

I can't get my mistakenly blocked K700i unblocked by either the original
network (T-Mobile) or my current network (Virgin)..... I reckon the OP
has slightly less than sod-all chance of getting that one unblocked.
