well I have made them interesting in fact I am now looking forward to the
next.
Instead of getting tense and shouting at the caller I have a new
approach............keep them talking as long as possible.............
1. delay their first line of sales.........you are driving and must stop,
you have a pan on the cooker and must take it off etc etc this can take say
1 minute.
2. delay their second line, oh damn someone has just come to the front door
with a delivery.........another minute.
3. delay their third line............the home land line has just rung I am
waiting a call............another minute.
4. then I turned up my audio and asked the caller what music they
liked............actually got a reply...........so I tell them what I like
and then placed the mobile next to one speaker for them to
hear..........they were by this time chuckling so I asked if they liked it
and I got a chuckle again.............another minute plus on this one.
the piece da resistance............now I sit mobile next to speaker and
leave it there.
In all more than 5 minutes of fun.....rather than 30 seconds of ranting
anger.
so in all I managed to costs them a few bob in calls to my mobile.....with
no sale of course..........after all, we did not have time to discuss a new
contract.

Why are you getting tense and shouting at people because you don't
wish to speak to them? Getting stressed isn't good for you and I
suggest that in future you just say "Sorry, I do not wish to receive
calls from your company - goodbye" and replace the handset.
It's polite, firm and doesn't play havoc with your blood pressure.
There's a good boy.

That's what I do, just put them on "hold" and wait a few minutes.

Re: How to deal with those cold sales calls
Why pretend?
Yesterday I had someone ring up from 08004049736.
1st Call - on foot by a main road - far too noisy - will call back later.
2nd call - in meeting - told to call back later.
3rd call - engaged in important landline call - asked to call back later
4th call - now I know that their presented number hangs up as soon as it
answers
"you don't accept my calls; I don't accept yours"

When I was bored I led one these annoyances up the garden path and then
put them on hold. They kept asking me to end the call. Presumably they
had no way to end it themselves.

That's novel a cold caller who doesn't know how to put the phone down
because of course they can end the call quite simply by doing so. Or
perhaps they had a rule that they weren't allowed to give up and they
just had to keep on trying until you either signed up or put the phone
down. If that was so they could have been there for weeks until someone
said OK you can give up now and cut him off.

Generally their instructions are never to hang up themselves, although you
will notice that the with-held ones often do when challenged.
I had a scamster ringing up withheld this morning asking for me as Mr. <my
partner's name> claiming to be from Nationwide...

I just tell them to bugger off and hang up. Never had the same caller
twice..!

I just hang up. I don't see why I should tie up my line for other calls.

I always answer with "Birmingham CID".
I've had lots of apologies and never a return call.

I'm surprised there isn't some forum somewhere where telecanvassers
post telephone numbers for people they've rung who were rude!

Just tell them "Thanks but I do not own a mobile phone"
Always confuses them!
