Just thought I'd write a quick note...

I corrupted my memory card yesterday. My phone wouldn't read it, Windows
wanted to reformat. I used ZAR, Zero Assumption Recovery, got everything
    back within an hour.

It has a demo version that allows you to restore 4 directories max at a
go. Once I found it worked, I bought it.

Just thought I'd post that in case others after get similarly afflicted.

Another couple of programs you can use and are free...

    http://pcinspector.de/file_recovery/uk/welcome.htm
    http://pcinspector.de/smart_media_re...uk/welcome.htm

The Smart recovery is designed for image retrieval from damaged media,
the normal file recovery one does files of any type.

    Hrm.

Perchance I should have come here first?

I'll take a look at those. Actually, no need. I tried PC Inspector File
Recovery, biggest load of crap I've ever seen.

It wouldn't detect my memory card, refused to do anything with it.
That's my own personal experience. The other experience was courtesy of
work, it totally messed up my computer at work - I wasn't personally in
charge of that so can't say what exactly happened, but a professional
colleague was trying to recover my 3 Gig deleted profile, but it ended
up restoring 20 Gig of file clusters, cluster376632 for example and
obliterated every bit of free space on the computer by literally,
overwriting everything and giving me nothing usable in return.

You gets what you pay for I suppose.

Zero Assumption Recovery though allows you to recover 4 folders at a
time per run (you can do all if you pay for it), and regardless of
whether you've paid for it or not, you can restore as many images as you
    want.

Plus the smegger is quick. It went through a 40 Gig NTFS hard drive and
found all lost and deleted items and such in under an hour. It also has
some funky options for RAID and it talks about rebuilding a RAID partition.

Just for the record, i've used both with success on tests I did for
deleted files on both hard drives and memory cards. If it doesn't
recover anything, that's fine - it hasn't done any harm to the data in
trying, as it merely reads the data in situ (as should any file recovery
    app)

Perhaps your colleague tried to recover to the same drive, rather than a
    different medium ?

That said, ZAR is also pretty good, as is GetDataBack and RecoverMyFiles

That could be an issue. :-) I aint saying anymore. :-) I was perhaps a
    bit too harsh.

Had PC Inspector File Recovery worked in my case, I'd probably be raving
about it. But it didn't. The options are confusing. It tries to do too
much for you while giving little control. It's typical of the "wizard
process" where "the user doesn't know what they want".

What I know about ZAR is in my case, it worked. It's interface is clean,
uncluttered, and looks pretty neat. Maybe Im just a bit fat computer
programmer geek missing the days of the DOS Defrag Utility (you know
    what I mean huh?).

Ok, its £50, but in my case, it's £50 well spent, as Im sure I'll find
    other things to torture.

    <cough> thepiratebay.org / astalavista.box sk </cough>

Nah, if something works, i`m happy to pay for it - I use TheBat! for
email rather than a fooked up M$ freebie with more security holes than a
    lacy blanket.
