Nokia E61 - suggestions for e-mail and virus check

There are two installed email clients on the phone.

One is something for exchange and the other is Blackberry.

Any recommendations for which one, or is there another smaller,
faster, lighter, better etc product out there?

Also, F-secure is the installed virus checker, but is there a better
one, preferably FOC?

Thanks for any advice.
Rob

Use the exchange email client if you want to synchronize with a Microsoft
Exchange server, use the Blackberry if you've got a blackberry subscription
and want to receive your emails via the blackberry push email system. Or if
you just want plain basic POP3 or IMAP4, just use the standard Messaging
email client.

If you're using POP3 or IMAP4 and are going to use email extensively, then
you'd probably want to have a look at ProfiMail
(<http://www.lonelycatgames.com/index.php?note=profimail&chapter=profimail>),
a third party email client for S60 which has a lot more features than the
built-in email client.

No free antivirus for Symbian. But you do not actually need any antivirus
on the E61. Programs can not run on S60 without having been installed
first, can not install themselves silently and self-signed programs can not
access bluetooth, internet send messages or make phone calls without your
explicit authorization. So as long as you stay clear of warez programs and
programs downloaded on "various" web sites, you can't get any virus on your
phone.

Of course, if you install warez programs or programs coming out of nowhere,
you might end up installing a worm or trojan horse but then an anti-virus
won't be of much help here. It might be able to detect the few known worms
and trojan that exist for Symbian but it won't detect all of them. If you
explicitely allow any program to install on your phone and do whatever they
want to do, there's nothing an antivirus or anything could do for you
unfortunately.

Thanks a lot for that info. I'm just getting to grips with using the
thing for e-mail so unlikely to be using it with other applications.

That said, is there a website dedicated to foc downloads for these
things?

Cheers.

<http://www.handango.com> is the reference site for free and commercial
mobile applications.

Steve Litchfield has a list of freewares for S60 here:
<http://3lib.ukonline.co.uk/nonagss60.htm> (only those marked with a red
star will work on your E61).

My-Symbian lists all the symbian applications as they are released so if
you want to keep up-to-date, check it here:
<http://my-symbian.com/main/index6.php?cat=6>

If you're just starting with your E61 and want to get the most of it, then
you might want to start at Steve's E61 tips page
<http://3lib.ukonline.co.uk/tipse61.htm> followed by Techmundo's E61
shortcuts page <http://techmundo.org/?p=27>.

A few free and cool things to try out on your E61:

- Browse the full web with the built-in web browser (called "Web" in the
SIM free version). Use the shortcut page above to get to grip with the
brwoser. If you do not have a data plan and are paying per KB, you might
want to use the free Opera Mini
<http://www.opera.com/products/mobile/operamini/> instead which uses less
bandwidth or if you're serious about web browsing on your phone, try the
commercial Opera Mobile
<http://www.opera.com/products/mobile/products/s60/> which has much more
features than the built-in browser.

- Mapping and satellite-like navigation without a GPS: register and
download the free Map24 for Symbian <http://www.uk.map24.com/>, launch it,
switch to 3D mode, enter you start and end addresses and you're on your
way.

- Mapping and satellite imaging on your phone with Google Maps:
<http://www.google.com/gmm/index.html>

- Find the phone number of the closest restaurant, book a table and see the
location of the restaurant on a map all in less than 15 seconds with Nokia
Mobile Search: <http://mobilesearch.nokia.com/A4160041>

- Listen to Internet radios: <http://www.e-series.org/archives/115>

- Watch movies on the go: convert your video files with the free SUPER
application <http://www.erightsoft.net/SUPER.html#Dnload> using the
settings here <http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/forum/showthread.php?t=48914>
then play the resulting files with the built-in RealPlayer

There are plenty of other cool things to do with the E61. AllAboutSymbian
<http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/> and their E-series forum
<http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=83> are the best
places to hang around if you're interested getting the most out of your
phone.

Cannot thank you enough for all this information. I'd be weeks behind
before I even figured out a fraction of this stuff. I really
appreciate the effort you've gone to.

Cheers.
