Yes. It involves phoning up Vodafone (f, not ph), and asking them for
an unlock code, and then paying the requested fee, which is (i
believe) roughly 20 quid.
I am not aware of any other methods at present... in fact it seems
many recent Sony Ericsson phones are, much like recent Nokias, very
difficult to get unlocked except via the original operator.

Re: unlocking w850i
It's possible to request an NUC at anytime from Vodafone customer
services. You can do this either by contacting 191, going into a
Vodafone store or getting in touch by email using the 'contact us'
option on www.vodafone.co.uk.
You'll just need to provide the following information:
- Make and model of handset
- IMEI number (you can find this by entering * # 0 6 # and pressing
send)
- Address including post code
Vodafone then contact the manufacturer to obtain the NUC code. If the
handset is under twelve months old then there would be a charge of
£19.99 to unlock the handset which is either debited from the account
(if contract) or needs to be applied onto the handset as calling credit
(if pay as you talk). If your handset is over twelve months old then
you can get an NUC code free of charge.

Is this 12 months you mention a fixed period or does it apply up to the
end of the contract period. I ask because our family has 18 month
contracts (which you need to get "Stop the clock") or two years (which
scored a 10% reduction in monthly charge).
Thanks,

also if the phone was purchased on ebay, how would i get it unlocked? do
mobile shops unlock them yet? or is the only way via vodaphone direct?

Re: unlocking w850i
If you're on an 18 or 24 month contract the wait would still only be 12
months before the NUC would be free of charge.
The 12 month period relates to the age and ownership of the handset
rather than the mobile contract agreement which is billed via your SIM
card.
