Nokia N70 symbols

I hate this phone. Whenever I reboot it, I get a new and random
arrangement of symbols - sometimes a tape loop symbol (although my
network sends SMS notification of voicemail, so this is redundant &
misleading), sometimes a bent arrow shows up that's not mentioned in
the manual.

Does anyone know how to control the symbols?

Sounds like you might have an iffy SIM. The voicemail spool symbol and
the divert symbol (your bent arrow) are controlled by the SIM card.
