NTL:Telewest announced today that it is to change its name to Virgin Media -
as it reported its third quarter results. The company declared net losses
for the period of £96.1 million - up from £52.1 million last time - but
revenues increased by 140.6 million to £1.02 billion.
The results follow NTL's acquisition earlier this year of Telewest and
Virgin Mobile.
NTL:Telewest said the name change will take place in the first quarter of
next year to take advantage of the Virgin brand.
The company reported a 13 per cent growth over the previous quarter in the
number of broadband subscribers to 265,000 and said telephony customers
increased by 6,100, although due to churn issues there were also significant
disconnections of broadband and telephony customers.
Until the re-brand, NTL:Telewest will continue to provide services under its
existing brand name. Virgin Mobile will continue as part of the new Virgin
Media group.
NTL:Telewest president and chief executive Steve Burch said: "Virgin Media
will shake up the market by bringing the Virgin traditions of value for
money, brilliant customer service and innovation to the world of
entertainment and communications.
"While work remains to be done between now and the re-brand, our decision to
announce its name and logo today is a reflection of my confidence that we're
well on the way to creating an organisation that can live up to this vision
by consistently putting the consumer first."
Gordon McCallum, chief executive officer of Virgin Management and an NTL
board member, said: "Taking on the Virgin brand is about much more than a
new name and logo above the door. NTL:Telewest's management team has
consistently demonstrated that it understands this and the commitment that's
needed to succeed. Much has already been achieved and we're confident that
the company's on track to deliver the Virgin promise when we re-brand next
year."

Virgin traditions - hmmm, that will be
i) blaming all faults on faulty kit bequeathed to them
ii) promising the earth as compensation for crap service today - the
old 'jam tomorrow' routine
iii) when i) has been replaced, blame all faults on new equipment
settling in, and 'teething problems
iv) lengthy, 40+ minute waits on an 0845 number to rectify
aforementioned faults
Brilliant customer service ??? Where ?
Innovation - erm, slap a Virgin logo on it, get someone else to pay for
it, and erm, take most of the credit for it.

If the "Virgin traditions" you point out above are in any small measure
imported into NTL, then I am sure many NTL customers will be happy with the
improvement.

Not true, i work for NTL:Telewest, and they are changing things BIG
TIME!!
NTL have taken on over 1,000 new staff in Swansea to manage calls & are
still taking on more.
Virgin Media will be a new start for NTL as Richard Branson will get a
say in what goes on there, so the new Virgin Media will be much better
than the current NTL.
P.S. If you ring 150 or 151 from an NTL landline, you get customer
service for free.

The blueyonder troll spoketh...
I'm on ADSL, faster than what BY/NTL can provide, and they're a cable
company.
Rock solid connection of 16MB.
You're on 4MB with BY/NTL and you're only gettin half that.
They're talkin of bringin out a 50MB connection.
What utter nonsense, they need to learn to walk before they start
runnin!

To be fair to ntl: I'm used to they're taking 25 minutes to answer the
phone ... last time I rang it was under 30 seconds. I couldn't quite
believe it.
Having said that, I only had to ring because they'd bogged up my bill.
However, the operative was very helpful in explaing the problem &
sorting it out.

Be fair Gonz. Remember that you're biased due to TW booting your account.

Erm........ No, possibly just very lonely.

Wouldn't dream of it.

Personally I find BY's internet offering pretty good so long as you discount
the "value added" (whatever that marketting drivel means) services (usenet,
email). As for the quality of their trolls, I'll leave that for others to
make their own minds up.

Hi,
You must be unlucky.
There are a lot of ISPs out there (particularly in the xDSL space - given
freedom for less corporate entity participation) providing fantastically
responsive and high throughput connections with good reliability and
pricing.
I think routine sub 30ms pings and near constant throughput at a good price
cannot be faulted... I would like to know what else you would like, want,
expect - I think what you are actually after is a coffee machine... not an
internet connection - wrong device / technology )only [light hearted]
jesting)?
Best wishes,

Are they going to stop messing about with their customers' traffic now?
The imposed "translucent" web proxying and interference with other
services were the main reason they lost my business.
