Welcome to the world of inflated
GPRS pricing. I remember when it first
started and was £20 per Mb in some cases. Followed by some half wits
from the providers saying no one was using it because it was "too
technical".
Things have got a bit better since then though. T-mobile is one of the
best priced but not if you don't have Web'n'Walk: as you've seen the
price outside a bundle is awful. Ironically if you'd have been on PAYG
you'd have paid ~£2 for that lot.
