Changing service plan - Am I being lied to?!

Right, I know nothing about mobile phones so if there's a faq, I've no
problem being pointed to it.

There's a fab service plan on Orange that'll give me unlimited landline
calls in the evenings and at weekends - just the thing for those long chats
with the girly. However, they don't have a phone I like so my thought was to
go with their free phone offer, give it to the girlf, buy the phone I want
off eBay and put my new sim card in it. Everyone's happy.

'Til I wondered if Orange's new sim card would work in a 3G phone I didn't
buy from them, especially as the phone I *did* buy from them wasn't a 3G
one. Rang them and they said the sim card wouldn't work on any phone they
didn't supply.

Please mobile-savvy people, who's right and who's wrong?!

But I dont think the 3g services would work unless the account had 3g
enabled as as you might purchase the sim with a non 3g phone this might be
a problem

Correct, you won't get the benefit of 3G using a phone supplied by
Orange which isn't 3G. It'll probably fall back to GSM, so still be
able to make calls, browser via GPRS etc - but video calls or higher
speed data.

If that's okay with the original poster, then that isn't a problem.

Other option is to go with a 3G phone from Orange, and give that one to
the girlfriend, that way you've got 3G enabled on your account.
