've been lucking at the best deals for internet on mobile - I don't need it
often, a few weeks per year when I'm away from home or on hols.
Now I notice that web'n'walk and 3's new X-series Terms & Conditions limit
you to accessing the internet / emails to on your phone, whereas I use my
phone as a modem to connect my laptop - which their contracts speficially
    outlaw.

The thing is surly data is data - how would they know if I am downloading
emails to my phone or my laptop

Rather than a data contract, you might be better off just paying as you go.
Depends on how much you use it. You can use your phone, or get a data card
which will give you much faster speeds. I use the Vodafone 3g+ datacard
(1.8Mbps max) on PAYT - the card costs about 99 plus 2.35 per Mb data

There is a £12.50 option called web'n'walk plus which allows the phone to be
used as a modem and to stream media.

You need to select a Flext tarrif then you will be offered it as an addon.

It can also be used with SIM only which is £7.50 a month.

It depends on what the "few weeks" are I suppose. If they are
consecutive then getting SIM only and enabling wnw plus for just that
time might be best. The wnw plus and indeed the SIM only itself could be
    cancelled afterwards.

If the weeks aren't consecutive and might be odd days spread throughout
the year PAYG is the cheaper alternative.

There are two options here. Orange to £1 a day unlimited GPRS which does
allow your phone to be used as a modem. However it is only at 2.5G
    speeds.

T-mobile has a £1 daily cap which means that the daily price will never
exceed £1. The T&Cs don't allow modem use but it is unlikely they'll
notice unless a huge amount of data is transferred. The indication is
that even if they do notice the connection speed will be throttled
rather than disconnection. I've never heard of that happening to anyone.

I also notice that T-mobile SIMs are currently free and give 3 days free
wnw if you top up by £5 or more. I also notice that they've added a
clause which has a fair use restriction of £40Mb a day.

    Steve.
