I have both of these phones with (what I believe are) identical factory
options under the Connectivity tab
Preferred Service: GSM only
SMS access: GSM
Now if calling and texting isn't any more expensive using GPRS,
shouldn't that be the preferred option?
If the answer is yes, why isn't if the default phone option?

No networks support SMS over GPRS, and it makes no difference to
charging anyway. Leave these settings alone.

Why offer the settings on the phone then?

because the 1 phone gets sold worldwide - they won't make a special british
edition, american edition etc etc - in other countries it may be possible to
offer that facility.

But they do significantly alter the phone's software, even across
network providers.
I just don't think any of us who're clever enough to post to usenet
could resist the urge to tinker with phone settings if the temptation
is there!

To allow networks to support it in the future. Some networks outside the
UK may already use it.

An odd bit of advanced thinking for an industry constantly trying to
get you to buy the latest phone.

Offering a configurable phone and managing to make a lot of money
bringing out loads of phones all the time aren't mutually exclusive.
