Upgrade phone options

I'm about due for an upgrade with Orange but don't know what phone to go
for.

I'm sure I read that the Orange SPV M3100 is a decent phone. have any of you
guys got any observations on it? Basically I must have bluetooth to work
with my cars' hands free, a camera, vibrate alert, anything better than the
battery life I get out of my Samsung Z500 (about 2 and a half days on
stand-by) and that's it.

However, I'm not too fussed about staying with Orange but their coverage in
my area is better than the others.

Research this with your car-kit manufacturer before you upgrade, you
don't get a 14-day cool-off period with an upgrade.

The 3100 is an excellent device, and does indeed have bluetooth but it
may not be the best for your car kit.

You could also consider

a) holding off on upgrading until you find a handset you do want
b) use the upgrade option of no handset & take the line-rental
discount instead...

If your current phone is working ok, why replace it ?

Two good answers - thank you.

I've just bought a Tom Tom 910 Sat Nav which has the Bluetooth connection
feature so I'll look into that.

Also, my current Samsung has begun to play up a bit. The latest being the
camera not willing to switch on and as I mentioned in my OP, the battery
life is terrible.

Any other advice welcomed.

Great device - for email, web etc - but pretty rubbish phone.

Benedict.

Just took a look at the dimensions - seems a bit bulky compared with other
phones.

I read the reviews that raved about this and was thinking of buying it
but... then I read about all the screen alignment problems over at the
modaco forum on the phone and how people are having to send their new phones
back to be repaired and getting 'refurbished' phones as replacements. I also
went into my local Orange shop yesterday and took a look at it. A few things
I did personally not like.

1. It seems very plastic and seems easy to break.
2. The keypad was so loose on the shop model that it slid in and out to the
point that I felt it would be a nuisance.
3. The letters/numbers on the keypad are printed on it and most had actually
rubbed off.
4. Felt that it was too bulky for a phone - yes, it is a smartphone but it
justs seems to bulky.
5. I held it in my hand and did not feel that it would make a good phone
6. I am not sure how practical the keypad is compared to a single handed
device like the Treo.

I went into my local T-Mobile shop and tried their M3100 model - forget what
it is called - and it had pretty much the same issues as above except that
the keypad numbers had not yet rubbed off that particular shop model.

I was very disappointed with the M3100 personally. I was seriously thinking
of going with one in the New Year but probably not now. I want a smartphone
and the M3100 is supposed to be the best of the bunch but I was just not
impressed. I am now thinking of just going with an 'old fashioned' phone for
another year or so until the smartphones look more robust and are both moe
reliable and more practical as a... phone.

Yes, I tend to agree with you. I'm due an upgrade any time now and my
Samsung Z500, although it's still working, is beginning to show signs of
age. Camera doesn't switch on any more for starters. I do like the clam
shell type of phone as opposed to ones with the keypad exposed. Trouble with
Samsung though is that the battery life's not good.
