#1 | | Guest | So last year I was at the Apple Store Regent Street at the time.
There was no live streaming.
However, IIRC shortly afterwards, the full specs went live on the Apple
website. I remember people, even Apple Store staff, checking out the
specs of the MacBook Pro (which debuted then)
Hey maybe there are a few crates of iPhones at Regent Street right now.
Maybe they'll go on sale on Tuesday.
Just imagine - seamless integration with Mac OS X.
For non-Mac geeks - there is a lot of buzz about the possibiliy of an
Apple phone (maybe you've heard?). Mr Kevin Rose, from diggnation, says
there will be. So it must be true.

as a rule, mobile phones are things that mobile phone companies give you for
free - even very nice ones that cost £500 without a contract.
unless apple have signed up with the phone companies to do the same, do they
think people will actually want to pay for theirs?

Do you really believe you get a mobile for free, without paying for it?

Really? I have bought my last two phone/pdas to use existing sims in,
and there are hundreds of places selling phones without contracts.
I am prepared to accept that a high percentage are obtained as part of
a contract deal, but it is not the only method by which handsets are
sold and apple are surely free to choose any marketing route they want.
I suspect that the sucesss or otherwise of the phone will depend on
diferentiating technical ability. If it is good enough there will be
enough of clamour for the phone services to offer it. If it isn't it
won't sell anyway. | | | |

I'm hearing nasty rumours about their being no 3G. Of course no-one
knows for sure yet, and may not know even after Tuesday. But no 3G is
an absolute killer for me, as it means no use as a modem.

Are thbere any 3G cards that'll work with a MacBook Pro in the
ExpressCard 34 slot?

Not at present, no. There's a Vodafone USB modem that will work, but
that means going back to Vodafone and incurring ludicrous data charges.
Plus it's yet one more thing to carry around - the current system of
just connecting through the phone I'm carrying anyway is working well.

We recently switched in work from Vodafone to T-Mobile. I'll be doing
more traveling to England soon and will need 3G connectivity. Hopefully
the Apple phone if it is released will have it.

Thanks Jamie, I've just read the review on The Register website.
It looks like an amazing product - a 'true broadband experience' all
over London (where I live & work). That is next on my shopping list.
Does anyone know if this will work on 'PAY AS YOU GO' on any of the
networks. I cannot get 'credit' as I am a foreigner (non-uk)?
Will I still be able to use p2p filesharing/Bit Torrent? What is the
approx cost?
Also I have no idea what HSDPA is. Just googled it I got loads of
technical jargon. I assume it's just like 3G, but faster (just a guess). | | | |

HSDPA is the technical acronym for GSM-style 3G data service, i.e.
what is used in Europe. There is also a CDMA2000-style 3G data service
with the acronym EV-DO (Google Novatel 720 for an example), and there's
in fact a third, China-only, 3G standard with the acronym TD-SCDMA. Novatel
is a US (or Canadian?) company and builds equipment for the first two
standards, both of which are used in North America, so I guess they're in
the habit of having to be specific about what their cards support.
