I have an old Ericsson T39m I use as a "rough phone" when fishing. If it
falls in or I fall in it does not matter!
It used to have a Vodafone PAYG SIM in but as coverage is better I have just
put in a Virgin SIM. As I expected the phone displays one2one as the carrier
as it was built long before Virgin let alone T Mobile existed. However I was
surprised when after what I presume was a SIM update from Virgin the phone
displayed Virgin as the carrier. However later when I turned it off it again
displayed one2one when I turned it back one. Not that it matters but can I
    make it display Virgin?

Your T39 is clearly capable of reading the network name stored on the
SIM card. If there is no network name on the SIM then the phone uses its
own internal look-up table of names and would display one2one.

I've kept my old T39m and use it when I go out on my mountain bike (not
much anymore!), because it is too risky carrying my P910i. The T39m is
an excellent phone and still feels small even all these years later. I
think it is the best phone ever made.
