I have just tried my E61 with sim card out and when it booted up it asked
something like "do you want to continue in offline mode" I clicked yes,
anyway worked fine on google ETC. I used wireless network in my house.

P.S. got rid of my Vario II for this and E61 is much better, OK no camera or
other extras but it does the job I need it to do and key board is great,
could not get to grips with touch screen on Vario. E61 screen is much
better.
