Does anyone know a web-to-SMS gateway that charges less that 5p per
text and will make messages appear to come from my phone, so I
    receive replies directly?

Alternatively, any other way of sending cheap texts that appear to
    come from my phone?

Looks good, but do they actually make the texts appear to come from
your own phone number? It doesn't say so on their site.

It looks like just what I'm after, but these reviews don't fill me
    with confidence:

Apparently it's 6.4p. I can get 7p texts from my network provider,
so Skype is probably won't be worth the extra hassle unfortunately.

That's remarkably cheap. But again, it's a site which doesn't
specify whether you can choose which number it appears to come
from. I would have thought that would be a huge marketing plus.

I've not had any problems with this group.

Have you looked at clickatell? Can't remember exact amount ... oh here ...
    about 3p....

    http://www.clickatell.com/brochure/pricing.php - I can send from anything
including my own number. (e.g. I could send from "Tom E H")

Nope. It takes 2 credits to send a message to a UK network :-(

For an outlay of 10 Euros, you could test the service I suggested. You
can even use the credit to ring UK landlanes (among many other
destinations) at 0ppm, or UK mobiles at around 5ppm.

I have been in contact with Vyke about their web site and they answered that
the site is now undergoing a major overhaul.

    About your specific questions about Vyke and sender-id;

Sender-ID from the java application is set to the number of the SIM card you
are using when installing the application.

Sender-ID from the web site can be altered from time to time, but only in
conection with a confirmation procedure. Just to check that you actually
    have the number you're entering.
