I`m quite surprised. I deffinately sit in the "Not harsh enough by far"
category here, but I`d have thought there`d have been some idiots piping up
saying that it`s wrong :-)

presumably the same people who think they are perfect drivers, even after a
few pints.
some tosser on the radio today explained he only used his phone when driving
at 100mph on the motorway.
another expressed surprise that he had been stopped by the police as he
hadn't been talking on his phone, merely looking at the screen to see who
had called him.

I suspect they wouldn't have been bale to charge him with whatever the
new offence is of using a mobile as he wasn't making a call - but Due
care or dangerous driving were two options they doubtless considered

Because there are thousands of twats on the road that still drive while on
their mobile.

I agree that this will not work without more coppers out there spotting
these people and nicking them.

Truck drivers should lose their licence, they are driving lethal weapons

I'm guessing here, but I suspect more people lose their lives as a
result of a car crash without any HGV involvement than with.
Pretty much any vehicle that can be driven on the road is heavy enough
and fast enough to kill - perhaps if they do away with the fine and
points altogether and give immediate 12 month bans - no exceptions*
* if you were on the phone _to_ the police to report a hazard or
criminal activity under circumstances where it's difficult or impossible
to stop safely, such as a motorway, or you were following suspects to
assist the police, i'd give 'em a break.
(i've been guilty of the first example above letting them know of an
obstruction in the carriageway of a motorway - my "crime" mitigated by
an attempt to protect public safety)

I`d say you`d be safer using the hard shoulder and one of the orange
emergency phones - it makes it a lot easier for people to work out exactly
where the obstruction is.

It was where the M62 crosses the M6 (where it narrows to two lanes
eastbound) - IIRC there's no hard shoulder at that point

The last time I went that way was over a year ago :-) And in that case, my
first reaction when driving my own car would still be to get away from the
area somewhat and then call it in from the hard shoulder - it`s not worth me
getting snotted to try and help someone else :-)
