I've got a Nokida 6500 Classic so I don't have half those features. Any tips
    for me?

Menu - Settings - Phone - Operator Selection -Set to 'Manual' using your
provider, this stops the phone continuously searching for a better signal
from another operator when it can't use the other operator anyway, and more
than doubles your battery life in poor signal areas.

But I will only be able to connect to T-Mobile? So why would it search for
    other networks?

Because if it is set to Automatic, it continuously searches for a better
signal from a different operator, even if there isn't one, or it can't use
one. I am in a poor reception area so setting it to manual prevents it
looking for a better signal when there is not one, my battery life has gone
up from 3 days to 7 days, but I don't use the phone much, and it spends a
lot of its time sitting in a poor reception area.

    Err, who told you that?

A phone will try other networks once, once it knows it can't connect to
them it remembers this and doesn't try again.

I only know that since I did this with my Nokia 6500, the battery life has
more than doubled, so something to do with the automatic setting must be
running the battery down quicker than it should.

    Factually wrong.

The phone will always search for a better signal, in the hope of finding
its home network. At the same time, it will also detect other networks,
but that won't use additional power.

Once it has tried to connect to each network and failed, it will
remember and not try that network again.

Switching from Automatic to Manual will NOT make the battery last longer.

Try switching it back to Automatic. The battery life will stay doubled.

It does, but one thing I did get wrong is that the phone is a 6300, not a
    6500

Tried it when I first changed over from auto to manual, and the battery life
dropped back to how it was before the change, then increased again when I
reverted back to manual. I am not guessing or presuming, I am stating what
actually happens. As I stated in the previous post though, I did get the
phone model number wrong, the phone is not a Nokia 6500, but a 6300

Makes no difference which phone it is. It wont help with any GSM handset.
