What network are you on? Some specifically exclude data calls from
inclusive minutes even if they are to 01/02 numbers.

I used to use data calls myself and at 9600 baud it is excruciatingly
slow. I stopped that now GPRS and 3G is affordable well at least on some
networks.

Clara has a free service (continuous free trial) and they used to have
an 01/02 number but I don't know if it is still active.

What tariff?

I haven't checked Orange for a while but IIRC all but old ringfenced
tariffs exclude all data calls from inclusive minutes.

Data calls are excluded from Orange's inclusive call allowances, even to
geographic numbers.

Quite easily.

No networks offer this facility now, and nobody really uses dial-up
anymore as GPRS is much cheaper if you get a package.

Hi Jon,

I run with PAYG and use dial-up when away on hols (about 6 weeks of the
year - not in one go), as I need daily internet access to run my business.

I have been using Orange, but the service was so intermittent around
Scotland and its Islands, it was basically a waste of time. Yet many others
didn't have any problems. The plan this time is to obtain some sims for
other providers as back-ups.

What do you consider the best route to take?

Thanks

John

Yes they do!
I have a Virgin £10/month for 300 mins contract.
GPRS is charged at 5GBP/MB - veeeery expensive I think.
You can't buy chunks of data. I don't need 300 mins but I would like
some data instead of all the minutes. Only O2 includes some, albeit a
small amount of data, in the tariff (currrently 1MB). All the others
make you pay extra on to of an already inflated price for a voice
tariff. Having said that, I think that T-Mobile do include data in
their FlexT tariff, though they do charge it at 7.5GBP/MB.
Yes GSM is slow, and I'd prefer to use GPRS, but it is a lot cheaper
than 5GBP/MB
When will mobile operators introduce tariffs with data included and
more data at a reasonable charge?! They have been trying to push
internet access for years but they continue to overcharge for the
data.

I use Xseries from Three at £5 a month. The really handy thing is the phones
roams onto two other networks. Orange and O2. So it's really hard to be left
without a signal!

I think these data tariffs can be alright on their own. What I object
to is being compelled to have lots of minutes/texts - particularly
texts that I may not want to use, before it is possible to get data at
£5/month.

With T-mobile at least you could get a SIM only tariff at £7.50 a month
and add Web'n'Walk to that.

I agree though. I make almost no voice calls at all and almost
exclusively use the internet from a handset and laptop.

There are AFAICS no deals with a subsidised handset with internet access
but without minutes/texts.

Steve.

I've seen that tariff and I thought that would be good. However, I got
the impression, from the web site, that it was necessary to have a
flext tariff to be eligible for Web'n'Walk.

Well you can add Web'n'Walk using the online account access "My T-
mobile".

I've got the old Web'n'Walk Pro on SIM only (not available any more:
replaced by Web'n'Walk plus) but the option to add/remove the three
flavours are still there.

I don't know if they've stopped this for new SIM only users though.
