#1 | | Guest | Hi folks -
Is this socket a standard connection type? I can't find an equivalent
plug, and I'd like to play around with external antenna to see if I can get
a better signal at home in a rural wilderness....
Mobiland seem to sell an adaptor flylead (listed as " Handset Antenna
Connector" at http://tinyurl.com/2b286d) but I'd prefer not to have a
patchwork of connectors.
TIA for any info -

Yes, it's a standard Nokia 6310. Don't ask me why the whole RF
industry has managed since Marconi on about 5 connectors but the
Mobile phone industry needs a completely different connector for each
model of every phone ever made but they do.
>I can't find an equivalent plug,
It is a special Hirose connector as far as I have been able to make
out.

Thanks Peter, I feared as much.... Mobiland is my only option then.

Steve
Can you let us know how you get on - signal is poor where I live, OK if
I stand in the corner of my office but goes off if I move about! If the
aerial enhances things I might follow your route.
Thanks

OK - a _slight_ understatement :-) It still doesn't explain why
phone companies seem to have to use a different (non standard) aerial
connector on almost every phone variant they produce.

Or you could do what I did, as long as you're capable of minimal
construction.
Get a CARK-91 car kit off eBay, put it in a constructor's project box,
ideally with a sloping front panel. Mount the phone cradle on the front of
this and fit the speaker and microphone where convenient. If you prefer to
talk via a handset, get the HSU-1 and mount this alongside the phone
cradle.
Inside, put a small 12V PSU and cable the antenna socket to a TNC on the
rear. Plug a magnetic mount aerial into this and place where you get the
best signal.
Result of an hour's work, one desk-standing 6310i..!

For the same reason every piece of kit from camcorders to Ipods have
different batteries - to force you to buy their overpriced accessories.
When I bought my last digital camera, a key condition was that it accepted
2 AA cells.

I really wouldn't mind if this was the case but having produced these
damn fool connectors the phone manufacturers then usually don't sell
anything to go in them.

Many moons ago we made a desk mounted 2140 for someone who required
it to match his antique desk. Most of the car kit lived behind the
desk but somewhere I still have a photograph of what was probably the
only Mahogany mobile phone holder ever made.
