I hardly make any calls but me and the wife use alot of texts, which
network is best to go with, someone recommended orange because they give you
300 texts for every £10 you spend, but this sounds too good to be true?

    any advice appreaciated!

Yep, and so does O2 also with a tenner top up, and you can get a free
    O2 Sim from

    http://www.freesimcards.info/

Also I found that if i added "Favourite place" to it not only did i
    get 500 anytime mins
to O2 and landlines, but still kept my 300 Text !!!

and of course predials 07730 666890 O2 offpeak callthrough comes out
    of those mins!
(offpeak international and 0800/0845 for nothing extra)

Interesting, since the blurb on the site seems to suggest that adding
'favourite place' would remove the 300 texts, or least that's what I
    took it to mean.

I had o2 treats activated on a few sims that I got as a free sim
promotion a while back and never bothered to activate/top-up.

Or without the competition entry bollocks just collect one when you're
    next passing an Orange Shop.

Or without the need to queue then completing sales form with your name &
address and insistence on topping up with £10 bollocks just get one here
http://www.premier-stores.co.uk/competitions.php or for those that find the
competition all too much effort, then here

The top-up is £5 (rather pointless without topping up) and there's no
    form filling.

Note once you have done the top-up, Orange say the free text message credits
can take up to 72 hours before they are applied to the card.

That's what I had assumed, but in my case they have left me with my
    300 monthly text too!
Making the favourite place 500mins absolutly free, and my postcode
of WD17 covers about 2 miles around here
A much bigger area than i was expecting, and with free offpeak
    international/ 0800/0845 through Predials O2 callthrough number,
i'm very very pleased with O2 FP
