Mobile modems?

Are these mobile dedicated modems unique to each provider, and can you
just install your sim card into them from your phone, if you already
have an internet contract i.e. web n walk plus from T Mobile

Indeed. If your phone and PC have Bluetooth you probably don't need to
install any software, you just 'introduce' one to the other and away you go.
If not, buy a cable and the software should come with it.
