A relation is looking for her first mobile. She's fairly tech savvy
but simplicity and ease of use are obviously paramount. So, phone
needs to be a reasonable size, big keys, simple menus. What can be
bought now that fits the bill?
I'd still go for the 6310i as a model but not available new

You could look at the Mofofone AKA Motorola F3, PAYG for between £15-20
depending on the network it's locked to or (IIRC unlocked) for £26.95 from
http://www.expansys.com/p.aspx?i=139429 , all it does is phone calls, texts
and alarm clock. Keys are a reasonable size and the display is B & W with
large characters

have you used one? i thought that would be perfect but the CNET
review concludes:
"While the Motofone should be one of the simplest ever phones to use,
it's actually about as user-friendly as a Rubik's cube. If you only
care about making calls and you have all the numbers you need stored
on your SIM card, then the Motofone's fantastic battery life might
make it worth a purchase. Just don't plan on texting any time soon. Or
adding any new contacts. Or changing any of the settings if you lose
the manual. Or..."
so not so great.

Look at my thread "ASDA phones". They were cheap (£9), cheerful and easy to
use Motorola Motophones see: -

Yes, I bought one about 9 months ago because all I do is phone & text and I
was fed up with having to put my specs on to read/write texts or pick a
number from the address book. The added advantage is that I can read the
display in bright sunlight.
"as user-friendly as a Rubik's cube" - I have no idea what the author meant,
it only has 6 functions on it's "menu" Texting is straightforward as is
adding contacts to the address book. The comment about battery life is spot
on. Changing settings, well apart from changing the time because the clock
drifts quite badly there is only the ringtone (choose one that it came
with - you can't install your own) and ringer volume. If your're worried
about losing the manual, take a photocopy it's only 2 sides of A4.
I only have 1 criticism, the clock drift.. mine loses about 2 mins every
24-36hrs.

Buy a pre-owned Nokia and buy a new battery for it. My 85-year old dad's
working well with his old NK402 - makes calls, easy to read, excellent
battery life (esp with a 6310i battery).
As an aside, the speakers/ringers etc are available for the older
phones, so a complete refurb is quite easy and they'll last for years.
