    Hi,

I'm going to Tokyo soon, and I have an unlocked K800i currently on
    PAYG O2.

Any chance this will work in Tokyo?

    Thanks

    Re: GSM in Japan?

I have been going to Japan for the last 4 years with both tri and quad band
phones which never worked then a few months ago I went to Osaka and switched
it on to use my notes and camera and it rang ! and worked perfectly for 10
days, it was a Nokia E61 on T-mobile. Not sure if something has changed in
Japan but like I say I have had quad band phones before that did not work.

    Dave.

As a 3G phone, yes it can be made to work as long as you are using a UK
network with a roaming agreement with a Japanese network.

Nothing has changed in Japan. Your E61 is a UMTS device (3G for the
layman) and Japan has UMTS networks. It does not however have GSM
networks, so I will wager that the E61 you speak of is the first 3G
    device you have owned.

That sounds good. So I presume 02 has a roaming agreement with a
Japanese network? I'll email them and ask.
Do I need to do something to activate the 3G side of things? Will it
work on my 02 PAYG sim?

I had a Vario II before and that did not work in Japan, then again if the
Vario was not on the right settings it might have worked if I had it set up
    right ?

    Cheers Dave.

    Found this for 02:

We have coverage in Japan with the following network providers:
    DoCoMo
This is not a GSM network and you will need to use a special handset,
although you can put your SIM into the handset and then use it in the
    normal way.

You may wish to contact O2 Rentals to hire a mobile for your trip.
You can also email [email protected] or call us on 0870 737 0202.

You can use GPRS data services and media messaging on this network.

This network allows 3G services only so you must have a 3G device to
make calls or use other services. If you have a video phone you can
make video calls on this network.

Looks like 3G coverage is good in Tokyo:
    http://www.gsmworld.com/cgi-bin/ni_m...&net=nd&opts=2

    Here is a rental option:
    http://www.o2rentals.com/services/ja...apanese_o2.htm

So looks like as long as I dont make to many calls (£1 a minute!) its
best to take my 3G phone, otherwise get a rental for £20 a week.

You would probablyy want to check with O2 that your SIM is cleared for
roaming. I doubt weather it will work for PAYG, but a contract will
certainly be able to roam there.

Using the O2 international coverage check page
http://travelabroad.o2-uktech.com/coverage.php it would appear that PAYG
could be slightly cheaper than contract.
