If you've got an Orange Out here on payg Orange (5 free textx a day) then
beware of the SIM update. Make sure you change your Message centre number
from the one that ends in 979 rather than 973.
It's happened to two of my phones over the last couple of days!

Do you mean change _to_ ending 979. Mine is currently ending 973 but
don't know what it was before. At a guess, does the change kill the 5 free?
I'll understand if you don't want to elaborate too much.

I posted this a week ago, have people only just noticed..?!
Yes if you use the 973 number you will be charged for your messages,
ensure you change it back to 979. I think it's a deliberate ploy to get
people off OH myself, but then I always was a cynical old b****r..!
To reiterate - if you have the original OH your SMS centre number must be
+447973100979 and *not* +447973100973. Just change the last digit from 3
to 9.

+447973100979 is the message centre that Orange Out here customers use.
Occasionally when there is a SIM update the message centre reverts to
+447973100973 which if used by 'Out here' customers does not give the 5 free
texts a day.
Not sure why I shouldn't elaborate too much about this??

Thank you, after changing the number back and sending a txt today I can
confirm I am back on 5 free.

I couldn't possibly comment ;-)
Apologies to Ivor on missing his earlier post (Aug 29) on the same subject,
Tim's struck home as I had only just received the SIM update.

I only noticed as two of my phones received the update within minutes of
each other!

No it is not speculation, it is fact.
If an Orange 'Out Here' user sets (or has a SIM update) which changes
the SMS message centre to end in 973, then each text message will be
charged with no 5 'free' message allowance.
If the correct 'Out Here' message centre ending in 979 is set, the
first 5 texts are free and any further texts charged normally.
This is how the Orange system knows how to apply the different charges
to 'Out Here' customers.
The issue here is that 'Out Here' customers seem to be receiving over
the air SIM updates which set their message centre number incorrectly
to the 979 value and thus all text messages are chargeable.
In common with standard Orange practice, 'Out Here' is an old system
no longer marketed by Orange. Probably 50% of people who work for
Orange these days have no concept that it exists. Whether the SIM
updates are a ploy to move people away from 'Out Here' or simply
because whoever designed the system to send them 'never thought' about
'Out Here' will probably never be known.

Yes, my message centre number was only changed to 447973100973 this
evening, so I was able to swiftly change it back to 447973100979 to
continue with OH (I hope).
Thanks to the OP!
