The GSM association knows, and it will never become necessary.
The only reason America had to have a different frequency band was
because 900 and 1800 were already in use when GSM became popular.

At least they still use pounds ounces and gallons (even if they are a
different size gallon..!)
Petrol has gone up to $3.10 a gallon though :-(

?? Google "wine gallon". The 231 cubic inch gallon was certainly in use
in Britain before anyone there knew there was a continent to the west, and
was one of several gallons in use by the British at the time the US became
independent, none of which were the same size as the Imperial gallon (though
the "ale gallon" was close to it). The Imperial gallon was invented and
made standard in the UK only after the US was gone.
