If you put your SIM in that phone you are in breach of your contract and
after a few days 3 will cut you off.

This will not be in breach of the contract. I have changed my sim card
many times from different phones whilst being on different contracts
including 3.

Perhaps you have just been lucky.

In the T's & C's here:
http://www.three.co.uk/personal/help...=1164989896406

Page 1 would seem to cover the SIM card

5.3 Each SIM may only be used in Handsets which are enabled for 3 Services
and are authorised by us for Connection to the 3 network. Any attempt to use
the SIM in other Handsets may result in serious damage to the Handset and
may prevent you from being able to use it, including the making of emergency
calls. In these instances, we are not responsible for any such damage or
usage problems.

Page 2 mentions the Handset

"6.6 You must always co-operate with us and follow our reasonable
instructions to ensure the proper use and security of your 3 Services and
account. You must only use Handsets and Accessories authorised by us for
Connection to the 3 network and also comply with all relevant legislation
relating to their use."

Section 9.1.g does bother me:
"we reasonably believe you have permitted your Handset to be unlocked via
any unauthorised manner and/or have not paid any relevant Charges due in
contravention of Section 5.4 above."

Which I assume means you are for the "High Jump" if you diddle Three out of
their handset unlocking "Admin" fee plus the remainder of the first twelve
months line rental upfront.

FWIW
I was hoping to use an SE K610 that I already have (unlocked from T Mobile)
on Three's network.
(flashed with whatever the current Three firmware is to avoid any
"technical" problems).

I was actually under the impression that Three had relaxed its attitude
towards customers using a different handset to the one purchased with the
contract as long as it was a 3G device, but they would still clamp down hard
on the use of 2G handsets.

I presume Three don't want their handsets used in only GSM mode as it costs
them more money. I'll tell you that I've had mine permanently locked to
Orange/O2 for the last 2 Months because of getting p*ssed off with the
amount of dropped calls and the phone constantly swapping between 2G and 3G
etc. I'm now counting down to the end of my contract next Month and am on
the move to Vodafone.

I've tried manually setting to orange/o2, but when I do a scan
those two networks, and only those two networks, are mysteriously
missing from the results, even though I live in north east London
and have payg handsets on both o2 and orange that have excellent
signal strength.

That is because they show as 3. Your SIM makes them appear as 3's 2G
network.

Three is just a mass of contradictions. Note that all the
clauses you quoted apply equally to payg service, yet Three also
offers a SIM-only payg service where they explicitly invite you
to bring any old phone you have, here:

http://www.three.co.uk/personal/pric..._/sim_only.omp

with no mention of a requirement that the phone be 3G, let alone
"Three approved".

I don't think Three actually cares much what phone you use any more,
as long as you pay them. Of course their Terms & Conditions say
otherwise, so you never know.

Thanks. I selected one of the other 3s, but it reverts back to 3G
after a short while. Can you tell me how to lock it to 2G? I'm
using a 6120c.

Big "Our 3G Sim Your 3G mobile" banner at this url:
http://www.three.co.uk/personal/pric..._/sim_only.omp
" Love your mobile but want to join 3? Good call. Get one of our 3G SIMs,
slip it into any 3G mobile and start picking up calls and texts from just 3p
to any UK mobile or landline* - anytime."

Perhaps they (Three) are lurking here :-)
