My trusty Nokia 6820 has decided to keel over[1] so I might be in need of a
replacement in the medium term. I originally bought it just as a phone for
GPRS, but the full keyboard has come in very handy. Particularly neat was
the ability to run SSH using the full keyboard though the screen was a bit
small for that and it didn't really have enough power to run Opera Mobile
(very slow, and ran out of memory after about 3 pages as it only had 64KB
    for Java programs).

So I'm interested in a phone with:

    QWERTY keyboard of some kind
Not huge (like original the Nokia 9000, or most PDAs)
    Reasonable Java applet performance
    3G would be nice
    Nokia would be nice
    Not hugely expensive secondhand

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks
    Theo

[1] I was fiddling with it, deleted a contact from both SIM and memory, and
few mins later it decided it had no signal. Power cycled it and it's coming
up 'contact service' - same after removing battery, swapping battery,
removing SIM etc. It might be fixable with reflashing, but it's been having
trouble otherwise - microphone not working sometimes, other times cutting
out about 8 mins into a call.

That's a shame. The 6820 is fine, except a bit underpowered. It's the size
of a normal low-end Nokia phone (eg 2600) but the keypad unfolds to reveal a
QWERTY keyboard. It does EDGE, but sadly many places have gone straight to
3G. SSH, browser etc I do with Java applets, but being an early MIDP 1.0
phone with almost no memory it doesn't do them very well. I was hoping for
something like an uprated 6820 with a faster Java implementation, more
memory, higher res screen and ideally 3G.

I want it primarily as a phone, not as a PDA, so I don't need something with
a bulky big screen like the Nokia 9x00 series. SSH, web etc only get used
once in a blue moon but they're useful to have when necessary.

I suppose it's possible, though I tend to use the keyboard all the time for
sending SMS which just means carrying two things around.

Nokia 6822 if you can find one and can live without 3g or a Nokia E70
if you want a little more toys.

Thanks, those look neat. Now to save up for an E70...

Interesting, thanks - I hadn't thought of that angle...

I find the N61 keyboard just a bit too small as the only input device; had
treo 270s before and touch screen was fine, using keyboard mostly for
    symbols.

You want to look at the Nokia SU-8W bluetooth keyboard. I am using
one with a Nokia 6680 phone and it works fine.
