weird 'international' numbers on phone...

sort of!
just switched from orange to O2.
so i text my new number to all my contacts.
the phone number attached to the message doesn't beging with 0, it begins
with +4475
a few people say that having added me to their contacts, when trying to
phone me they either get a 'this call is barred' message or a 'this person
cannot come to the phone'
upon manually altering my number in their contacts to an 0 number, it works
fine.

anyone know why this might be? - is it something i should be doing on my
phone to fix my info or are certain mobile networks being strange? - or
indeed O2 ?

When someone not in my contacts sends me a SMS, I get the number prefixed
with +44 too. However when I have the number as an 07XXX XXXXXX added to my
phonebook it is recognised as their name when they text again. +44 is the
country code for the UK. So to make the number work they need to delete the
+44 and replace it with the 0.

Some of the network have not updated themselves to be able to cope with
the new prefix. Happens regularly when one operator has to dip into a
new prefix for the first time and doesn't notify everyone else in time.

+44 is the code for the UK, ALL text messages are sent like this - the
number will always be displayed as being received from +44, this is normal,
would have been the same with any other number / network you had.

They don't need to drop +44 and add 0.

I have all my numbers on my mobiles entered as +44...

Makes it easy for me when roaming, not having to manually enter as +44..
because the phone book has them as 0....

I'd guess like a previous poster, other networks haven't updated their
database yet with the new number range, same was as Virgin Media have only
just added the new 03 number range, yet had been working from BT for several
weeks.
