iPhone Maps.

Had my first look at an iPhone 'in the flesh' in an O2 shop at the weekend.
Must admit, it IS rather nice. Well constructed and a very nice intuitive
interface.
Found typing a bit strange with no proper buttons to press, but I guess
you'd get used to that.

No impressed enough to shell out and buy one mind. Maybe if it was half the
price (initial and monthly fee) I might be tempted...

Quick questions on the maps; looked and worked very like Google Maps, is it?
I assume the maps/satellite images are downloaded on demand, so is the data
transfer included in the monthly charge, or would you have to pay on top for
that? Or have I got it wrong, and the maps/images are stored locally(???)

They aren't going to be installed on the phone, which means on the fly. How
much you pay for that depends on the operator, and since the only one is O2
then the answer is "an arm and a leg".

BTW, you don't need an iPhone for Google maps. It works just as nicely on my
N73.

Ahhh, but can you manipulate the map by poking the screen on your N73...

No I use the joystick which is much easier I can do it one handed and it
doesn't leave marks on the screen :-)

Well as you can only get an iPhone on O2 on one of their iPhone tariffs
which include an unlimited data allowance (via both 2G/EDGE and "The Cloud"
WiFi hotspots), you don't pay any extra for downloading the map data. Mind
you at the price of the handset in the first place it would be (even more)
obscene if you did have to pay extra!

It looks and works very like Google Maps because that's indeed exactly what
it is.

Did you get a chance to try out the browser? Probably the best browser out
there for a handheld, fantastic, and outshines the pretty good one in my
e61. Serious thought has gone into it, it automatically adjusts the screen
to the column of text you are reading, its hard to describe fully, but it
worked perfectly well on many of the sites i tried it on, in fact it worked
well enough, that within my wifi network, the iphone is good enough and
quick enough to use as a genuine replacment...

But the new Opera Mini 4 browser does that on my N73, and I bet it can't
touch the speed of my 3G connection either! In fact I don't think there
is anything the iPhone can do that my N73 can't, but my N73 will do a
lot more as well! Basically, the iPhone is just like the iPod, over
priced, style over substance junk.

Have you seen the iPhone and iPod Touch side-by-side?

I considered an iPhone purchase, due to an interesting interface, but
am going to stick with my vastly superior n95. It's a shame Apple
couldn't design a phone which wasn't groundbreaking in any way, but
just had normal phone features like being able to send text messages
to more than one person at a time.

Hopefully they'll sort this out sometime in the future on a device
which doesn't cost the thick end of £900.

No, but I was referring to the iPod family in general, not just the iPod
Touch. They are all style over substance, there are far superior MP3
players available for far less money. I can't think of a single reason
why I would want to own one.

This is just it, there is nothing innovative about the iPhone at all.
There is nothing about it that warrants the asking price. I had a play
on a friends iPhone on Monday and was distinctly underwhelmed, up until
that point I still had a fairly open mind about the thing.

If the iPhone had hit the streets 18 month to 2 years ago, it would have
been a revelation. I would have given my right leg to own one, but now
it's just old outdated technology with a heavy layer of make-up and a
pretty frock. I could possibly even understand the appeal of an iPhone
if the thing was cheap to own, but the whole situation is crazy.

I suppose I may be biased as I own an iPod (I'm not an Apple Fan-Boy

Anyway, as I was saying, before my laptop decided to send my unfinished
manuscript...

I'd agree that in terms of range of types of media it will play, and video

everything I need it to), however in terms of ease
of use, and simplicity and smoothness of user interface, the ipod wins
hands-down.

Maybe you're right - if you wanted to pay the extra - maybe it is better,

I bought my H320 for £169 two years ago, dunno where that £273 price
tag comes from.
