Mobile phone with Wifi VOIP

What mobile phones are there which will make a normal mobile phone call, and
also make a VOIP phone call via WiFi
and are not linked to any service provider.

Most of the wifi enabled nokia mobiles like the E61, E65, N95 will allow you
to use as a standard mobile for calls and allow VOIP calls using the
built-in Internet Call application (In conjunction with a sip account) or
using something like the Fring appplication, for skype/msn/yahoo/sip/gtalk
calls.

I setup my friend with his N95 and a PAYG sim from 3UK. With this he tops up
£10 every 2nd month and uses £5 of that each month to buy the internet add
on and uses Fring will out and about via 3G, then uses the built-in SIP
client while at home via wifi.

I did notice Orange Online PAYG were selling the E65 for £99, think it would
be locked to orange, but I'm sure you maybe able to get in unlocked?

I have my Nokia N95 configured for VOIP over Wifi. Provided you have a
VOIP account configured in the settings, you use the left option button
when ringing out (above the regular green dial-out button) and this
allows you to manually select the network for the call (one of which can
be your VOIP/Wifi account) . The green button defaults to your mobile
phone provider.

It will ring for incoming calls regardless of whether somebody dials
your mobile or VOIP number(s).

Beware of mobile phone providers though. Some disable the VOIP element
of the software because they "don't consider the technology advanced
enough yet". *sigh* Orange and Vodaphone are two culprits (not sure if
they backtracked yet). Get your phone from a different provider or get
a sim free handset and that shouldn't be a problem. =)

They're really nice handsets (I like the Mocca variety). I considered
having one, and my only worries after looking through many reviews and
discussions were with an *apparently* easily scratched finish and the
coloured skin flaking off. If that's still a problem (did Nokia improve
it?), it's probably worth ordering a case around the same time as the
handset.

I say *apparently* because it's always difficult to gauge the
reliability of reviews and experiences posted online. There are so many
serial complainers about.

Or just re-flash to generic software. Pretty easy to do. I did this
with my Orange N95. I got it on software version 10, upgraded it to
generic version 11, then 12, then 20. It's vastly better now and does
VOIP perfectly seamlessly.
