Most filter content and wording, so even if a person connects to a proxy it
still doesn't work. Most businesses will also block a proxy. Keep up at
the back!

Sometimes if the proxy you're using runs a secure page (port 443..?) the
company firewall won't spot it. The paid-for version of www.anonymouse.org
works for me on most sites.

Use a VPN. Securix work(ed) pretty well.

However, if you have ADSL at home, get yourself a VPN server for
something, VPN to your computer at home, and then surf the internet
through that with no proxies.

The added advantage, is that your company can't tell what you're
surfing, only that you're connected to a VPN.

If the company are smart enough to block web access then it's a fairly
safe bet the the users will have limited accounts and won't therefore
have the ability to set up VPN connections.

Not necessarily.

If you're in IT for example, where setting up VPN's are an essential
part of your support work.

Yes but the majority of users (me, for example) aren't in that situation.

So? It doesn't make it a terrible idea just because you can't use it. As
I say, Im sure there are still many users out there who have their
internet access monitored but don't have their systems locked down.
