GPRS charging gateways


Hi ,
I am curious as to how i get billed for my usage of the internet
over my gprs modem.Does anyone know how the billing is carried out
with respect to the packet traffic?

You pay by the kilobyte. It's that simple.

But, for example, Orange World's homepage and some links off it claim to be
'free pages'. So there must be more intelligent billing than just counting
bytes through the PPP connection.

Yeah its true its some kind of intelligent billing system through the
ppp connection so my question is, is this data limited to tcp/udp
connections? or is it like analysing the source and destination ports
of your traffic and then charging it for example all traffic with
destination ports 21,22,80,8080,3128 are charged, anyone have an idea?

Suppose there could be a simple script like "if URL =
*.free.orange.co.uk then price=0".

Some of the latest phones also have over-the-air software updating, e.g.
Sonyerincsson W910i, data costs for these updates are also free (on
Orange anyway)
