Nokia N95 or LG Viewty

I have been informed by O2 my mobile is up for replacement. I have been
looking round and cannot make up my mind between the N95 and the LG Viewty.
Couple of questions. What do people think of the either phone? Also I use
about 600 texts a month and 300 mins calls. O2 have offered me the
following for 500mins and 1000 texts.

N95 Silver
£30 18 month
£35 12 month
£25 24 month

N95 Black
£45 18 month
£50 12 month
£40 24 month

LG Viewty

£35 18 month
£40 12 month

All the above seem slightly high to me can anyone suggest a better deal
elsewhere?

I had exactly the same handset choice when I upgraded last month with
t-mobile.

I did quite some research into both handsets and asked many questions on
various forums, (including this one if I remember correctly?)

I opted for the N95 eventually as I was concerned about the reports I had
heard reference the LG Viewty battery life and its habit of crashing when
browsing the web. Having already owned a Nokia N73 I had an idea of what to
expect from the N95 in terms of ease of use etc.

The N95 is a fantastic phone, good battery life, Wi-Fi, easy to use web and
e-mail and its got a decent camera on it too!

As for your price plan if you stay with o2 you'll probably be able to get a
"black" N95 which look quite nice. I've got a silver one on t-mobile.

A quick look at the carphone warehouse website,
http://shop.carphonewarehouse.com/pa.../n95-graphite/ , shows
the best offers available from them in terms of tariffs etc. As you'll see
their is no need to pay for the handset!

I got mine from CPW and as most of their phones are unbranded you don't end
up with a crappy looking front fascia or logo'd back cover etc.
Incidentially I got a free Nokia in car charger actually included in the box
with the handset as they are not branded. I also managed to blag a 2gb
memory card out of them as well!

Kev, many thanks for your prompt and detailed reply. Out of interest I have
noticed that when I have spoken to O2 on two separate occassions they have
quoted different deals each time.

The original deal was

N95
£25 18 month 1000 texts and 500mins and free O2 to O2 calls
£30 12month 1000 texts and 400 mins

At the time I did not realise the difference between silver and black so I
presume the above deal was based on silver. The second time I phoned they
quoted the deal below which was dramtically different. This indicates to me
O2 do negoiate on these deals. I have checked the CPW site but that does
not seem to match the current deal as above. Is the Nokia N95 available on
vodophone or is there an alternative model number?

While I have always been extremely reluctant to give CPW any business,
then idea of an unbranded handset is very appealing (given comments about
usability on N95 and N82 - the main contendors for me at the moment).
I've also been told that O2 sell unlocked handsets, but presumably they
have O2 branding? But is this easily removed on these handsets?

Chris,

Most branding is easy enough to remove using a pc kit etc. It'sjust when
they start fixing logos etc to the phones.

Well just to be clear - I take it you are meaning "silver N95" to be the
older model with a slightly smaller screen and an external memory slot, and
"black N95" to be the newer "N95 8GB"? It will definitely be worth making
sure you know which of those you are being offered as the N95 8GB is worth a
fair bit more than the older model.

CPW have slightly odd tariffs as they operate as their own Service Provider
for O2, so their tariffs tend to be subtly different to the "official O2"
ones. You should be able to get the N95 on Vodafone - though not through
CPW as they don't do Vodafone these days.

As a rule of thumb, any mobile network will offer its best deals via the
retentions department - i.e. the people you speak with when you are thinking
of leaving. Probably the easiest way to coax the best deals out of O2 is to
call them up and ask for your "Port Authorisation Code" (PAC) and claim
you've seen a great deal on another network for the phone you want. The PAC
is what you ask for if you are wanting to take your number to another
network, but the beauty of it is there is no obligation to actually use the
code and it expires 30 days from being issued (and it is normally free,
though occasionally has a small admin charge). If you haven't actually
signed up to another network then you simply continue as before with your
current network. If you do use the PAC though then your old contract
automatically gets cancelled when the number ports over, and so when you
phone to ask for a PAC it is the last chance your current network has to
talk you out of it, thus they tend to offer you the best deal they can
(usually according to how much you spend with them).
