I purchased a Samsung D900i Tmobile from prepaymania.co.uk. The phone was
much cheaper than anywhere else. I received the phone today, but the void
seal had been broken on the box. So should I accept the phone in this
    condition?

Up to you. Personally I wouldn't.

Depends on how much you paid and are you willing to risk it.

I received an email from prepaymania.co.uk because I queried on why the seal
was broken. Their explanation was because the phone was purchased with a £5
Tmobile topup (compulsory) the box had to be opened to add the credit. So is
this plausible or just normal practice?

Where in the phone did they stuff the fiver..? No need at all to open the
box, they could have sent you a voucher or whatever to add it yourself.

I think that they took the payg sim pack out and added £5 on the top up
    card?
    here is the phone's ad

Almost certainly opened by T-Mobile to insert the SIM card. If it looks
ok I wouldnt worry about it.

    Sounds reasonable to me.

Then there's a risk of the fiver not getting credited to the phone it
was meant to get credited to, which can result in clawback for the
    retailer.

It's done to combat box breaking. Geniune purchasers should not have any
issue with buying crdit at the same time.

And just how does it do that..?

I don't. Why can't I buy credit without opening the box..?

If I buy a product that comes in a box, I expect a sealed box. That way I
know nobody has tampered with it.

If someone insists on opening a box before I buy it, they don't get my
    custom.

I would. Why can't the user insert the SIM card themselves..?

I think John meant to put the SIM card into the box (not into the phone)
so that it was all packaged as one item rather than have to send a box
(phone) and a SIM pack. That's happened to me and others in my family
when we order phones on the Internet or by phoning the supplier.

Not answering your question here but I bought a D900i PAYG from o2. The
battery with hardly any use lasted *just* over a day. Flogged on ebay after
3 days. Did I buy a lemon or are you getting better battery life than me?
