Nokia 6120 - keeping it powered?

I couldn't resist 3's mix n match 1100 deal a couple of weeks ago so got
me a new phone and contract.

Due to comments here and elsewhere about the problems of keeping an N95
in battery, I opted for the Nokia 6120 instead, but am suffering exactly
the same problem.

From fully charged in the morning, moderate usage has the battery flat
by early afternoon. I've now got car chargers for when I've got the car,
and having got stuck in London with a dying phone and no car last week I
now have one of those emergency chargers, but got through 4 Duracell AAs
keeping it going until tea time.

I've ordered a couple of spare batteries (cheap BL-5B copies) to keep in
my pocket fully charged as a cheaper option than buying the duracells,
but this all seems like a bit of a faff.

Having made the step from 6310i (charge one a week if it needed it or
not) to 6230i to the 6120 I feel at the moment that I've made a big step
back for the convenience of e-mail on the go.

So what's the technique of choice for keeping these phones going when
you've not got a car or a mains socket to hand? I'd rather not have to
open up the phone to change batteries unless I have to.

I have a humble Nokia 6300, but that phone has various settings which can
save power - in the 'Display' part of the 'Settings' menu, for a start.
Also look for options to turn off features you aren't using, such as
'Bluetooth', network connection, email alerts, etc.

That sort of helps - if I really want to I can take out the SIM and pop
it in my 6310i and it'll last for ages on 2G - but what I really want to
do is use all those whizzy features

I guess I was wondering if there was a way of providing rechargeable
external power such as this sort of thing - http://www.batterygeek.net/
(http://tinyurl.com/25mvns for short, just) and if so which was best.

Ah; I haven't tried any of those (yet!) although I have got a
solar-powered gadget that would probably help - if I had an adaptor to
connect it to Nokia's daft new extra-tiny coaxial socket. In principle,
any bundle of rechargeable or disposable batteries wired to produce
roughly the same voltage as the mains unit for your phone, should work.
How much you pay for the wires and a container, is up to you )

The standard BL-5B battery in your phone produces 890mAh - there are LR06
(AA) sized rechargeable NiMH cells that can manage 2000mAh so a set of five
in series should be able to produce roughly the same voltage (5.7v) as the
Nokia charger for a useful length of time. Not that I'm any sort of
battery expert!

It is listed on <http://www.nokia.co.uk/A4803795> - but the Nokia 6120
isn't listed as 'compatible'. However the DC-8 is also shown on that page,
and is compatible with the Nokia 6120. It's priced at £24.50 but is 'out
of stock' on the online store (as is the DC-1 at £59).

I found that the battery life from mine improved very noticeably over
the first couple of weeks, so it might be worth seeing how it develops
if you haven't had it long. Standby time is quite reasonable, I find,
as long as it has a signal: it'll flatten itself searching in a few
hours.

The DC-8 is basically what I bought in CPW for £15 (and is available on
eBay for about a fiver) and fed batteries last week.
