I have a Celtrek
SIM, from
http://www.celtrek.com
which can be purchased with a UK landline number for inbound
calls and is quite cheap in some countries (I bought it for
Japan, Korea and some Latin American countries). Unfortunately
it isn't so cheap in the countries you are visiting, and
outbound calls are call-back so it is a bit unnatural, but
mine has been reliable everywhere I've gone with it. If you
aren't planning on making a lot of calls this might be good.
If you happen to have a 3 contract phone you could just take
that to use in Australia and Hong Kong, at least, since they
are 3-like-home countries and roaming doesn't cost extra
(unfortunately, Australia isn't included with a PAYG
SIM).
If you instead decide to buy a local prepaid
SIM you can
kill two birds with one stone by going to a China Unicom
store in Hong Kong and buying a
SIM there; the
SIM comes
with both Hong Kong and China phone numbers and work in both
countries.
That's all I know.
