My employer is offering to supply me with an Orange phone with which to
make work calls. They also offer the ability to set up 'Orange Enhanced
Line 2' so that I can also make private calls, billed to me, on the
same phone.
If I take them up on this and set up the Enhanced Line 2 account, will
both the accounts then continue to function correctly if I transfer the
sim card to my own (unlocked) phone?
Thanks

Depends on the phone. Many phones support it (including my Motorola), but
some don't.

If it doesn't, it can probably be enabled, if it's a Nokia try here:
http://www.unlockme.co.uk/linetwo.html
although this page seems to be a little old,not sure if it will work with
newer handsets.

5 Years ago seemed half the people I knew on Orange had Line 2
(usually OVP Virgin L1, ED50 L2).
Orange now only offer L2 to business users.
What a Farce. The Futures bright, the Futures anyone but Orange.

On the last (ever) contract I had, I had Talk 60 on the main number and
Talk 30 on Line 2. Gave it up as I seemed to be making calls to use up the
minutes.
The specs for the mobile systems allow for Line 2, why can't it be offered
on *all* tariffs on all networks..? I for one would love to cut down on
the number of phones I have to carry about..! I have one for personal use,
one for work (personally supplied and paid for, the company won't give me
one but I don't want them to know my personal number) and one with the
original Orange Out Here pack on for the free SMS. If I had L2 I could
lose at least one phone..!
Why have no other networks ever offered Line 2..?

The other PCN network 121 had Line 2 incoming only,
but as soon as T Mobile took them over they scraped it
AFAIK the only reason the networks don't like to offer L2,
is not all handsets are control sim protocol (CSP) enabled for it,
letting the sim control things like L2 and voicemail, etc.
They don't want to complicate things for themselves.
Nokias CSP can be switched.
The Networks could simply say L2 is only offered on approved handsets
Seems easy money for them if they could be bothered,
even O2 and Voda could add it, Voda have added CSP controlled Voicemail

Possibly not. It depends if the phone you are referring has the facility
to support Line 2.

OK, i was close, but "control" is a better description than "custom" of what
it does

Never advertised, of course lack of demand if you don't tell anyone!
What was truly amazing is how Hans Snook created Orange
with a customer base of over 12 million with hardly any advertising,
relying on mostly word of mouth.
Now FT Orange spend a fortune patronising it's customers
advertising with inane animal analogues on TV, and insulting movie stars
in the cinema, resulting in dropping from joint first to 4th place.
FT Orange are a prime example of how lousy management
can inherit a successful one and wreck it.

Thank goodness Orange never advertised Push-To-Talk properly. We have
been saved by school kids using their phones like CB sets with the
speaker volume set to eleven :-)
Instead of numerous websites and blogs about technical fanciable
features of phones and their fashionable looks, what would be useful is
a run down of the technical features of the service providers. Who does
EDGE, 3G, wet string etc - and where does each service geographically work?
If they can't advertise their wares properly, maybe someone else should
drag the info out of them.
Bit like http://www.samknows.com does for broadband. Does anyone know of
such a site for the UK?

You might hate the way PTT was used until Orange with the usual lack
of publicity managed to kill that too.
Instead of meaningless inflatable animals floating around, Orange should
have
had a TV ad campaign of professionals and workers talking by PTT
It's been a big success in the USA
It seems Orange are so deeply tied into the absurd animals totem concept
that they spent millions on developing, no one there can change the
companies direction

Re: Advice Please - Orange Enhanced Line 2
Thanks for the replies. Summarising:
If the phone supports Line 2 and if the support is enabled then my plan
should work. If it supports Line 2 but it is not enabled then it may be
possible to enable it, given the correct software and information.
Have I got this right?

At the risk of replying too late to be useful, be careful whether you're
referring to "Standard Line 2" or "Enhanced Line 2".
Standard Line 2 uses the GSM "ALS" functionality as some other posters have
mentioned - and, within reason, any GSM handset will support it.
Enhanced Line 2 uses a Java menu in the SIM which the handset must support.
It allows roaming and outgoing SMS on Line 2 which the "standard" variant
doesn't. There did exist a list once on the Orange website of which phone
supported it - of course, this page is doing a very good job of hiding now.
I'd guess Business CS might still have it to hand...

Jon.
