Ok, so as we all know the last iPhone was lacking in certain
features, I've had a scooch at the O2 website to see what info
I can find on the new one but it still seems that it doesn't
support MMS, yes I know I can email pictures, but I can't
email to someone elses mobile phone unless their phone is also
    set up to receive email.

My reasons for not getting one last time were the fact that it
didn't have 3G and it couldn't do MMS, have they honestly gone
and launched another one without a service that we've had on
mobile phones in this country since about 1999?

I'm unsure if there are any technical reasons why it can't do it
(after all, one can download an MMS utility from Installer App which
works) and the iPhone even supports .3gp video (I watched one on on
the BBC Mobile news site last week) and it obviously supports .gif &
..jpg and plays audio without issue so I'm assuming that Apple have
decided they don't want to support MMS.

Although I must admit that I've only sent four MMS' in the last five
    years and received just three.

With so many phones having a half decent email application these days,
surely the days of MMS are numbered?

Since I've had my BlackBerry, I've not sent a single MMS and only sent a
    handful of MMS messages.

MMS is an excellent way of marketing to their customers though. When
I was on Vodafone for a year or so they came quite frequently.
Animated adverts with video and music for nothing but network
    bandwidth = good value.

Well as the other poster has mentioned - you can already use MMS on the
current iPhone if you jailbreak it and install the 3rd party app. Since the
new firmware (and phone) will include official 3rd party application
support, I would be very suprised if an MMS app wasn't in there from the
    start.

I haven't seen any indication that the iPhone 3G will have built in MMS
support, but then again I've not seen anything saying it won't either. From
the look of it though they are pretty adamant that MMS isn't something they
want to support with the iPhone, and to be honest it's not something I am
too concerned about considering how expensive they are (and remember barely
any contracts in the UK have any included).

As MMS is half the price to send when roaming, I think it has a lot of life
    left.

Also MMS is immediate, its about now, sharing something with your mates now,
    not when they check e-mail.

IMHO Push e-mail will remain a business application, so will not replace MMS.

I suspect MMS is not a high priority for many users. I've had MMS phones
for years, and have never used the feature, and I think I've maybe
received only a couple in that time.

A bigger drawback for me would be it's lack of a realplayer app
integrated into safari. I don't know if this can be got round with the
    new apps feature...

I'd leave a company that spammed me with that kind of rubbish. I take it
    you could opt out?

Apple have very big plans on that score though, you would be surprised just
how many people would be attracted to the me.com push email, calander,
    contacts and favourites syncronisation.
The setting up of an exchange server, or getting one hosted (the solution i
have) is not the kind of thing the average less technical person could do.
But setting up me.com is likely to be as easy as signing up an msn hotmail
    account.....

But you still can't receive MMS on an iPhone. Crazy.

The ability of people to rationalise and defend an incredibly poor piece of
hardware just because of the "Apple" branding is amusing. If M$ had produced
this rubbish there would be little in the way of positive news.

I wasn't defending Apple at all, read the first reply in this thread
which is by me not supporting Apple. I think not having MMS is a bad
idea, but I can count the number of times I've received one from a
real human bean using the fingers of my right hand and I have only
sent about two in my entire life.

I think the most useful purpose for MMS is e-ticketing - you buy a ticket
online for a bus/train/concert which sends a barcode by MMS. Then you just
have to scan the barcode at the door (and make sure your phone doesn't have
    a flat battery).

Could be rather amusing if all the trendy iPhone users are excluded from
    their favourite trendy concerts

It certainly makes a good phone, excellent MP3 player and a fantastic
video player. Have you not seen the screen quality on an iPod Touch &
iPhone? What makes you think it's a waste of money and overkill?

    that fast.

I got rid of my Nokia n95 and got an iPhone and still prefer the
iPhone, even though it lacks 3G.
