I think they had to- EU directive. Tesco dropped theirs from £8 to £4. I
got a text about it (or rather a text to ring a free number with info)
    the other day.

I don't know but it's still an absurd price. Mobile operators offer
one GB for ten pounds (or thereabouts) in the UK, which equates to a
price of about 1 pence per MB, yet charge several pounds per MB
    abroad.

All the mobile operators' data roaming charges are still a couple of
orders of magnitude too expensive and it's about time the regulators
got serious about controlling this little cartel.

How about a local sim card? I pay 80 cents per Mb in Spain.

    I think perhaps they can.

I have a SmarTone-Vodafone data-only SIM which I use in Hong Kong with
a USB 3G modem connected to my laptop. It works fine in that
configuration, but if I put the SIM in my Nokia N95 and try to use it
with the web-browser there it doesn't connect. Both the 3G modem and
the N95 are unlocked, so there has to be some other way the network is
    restricting its use.

I've configured all that. I have another ordinary SmarTone-Vodafone
SIM that works fine in the phone. Its just the data-only SIM that
works only in the 3G modem and not in the phone. They must have some
sneaky way of determining whether you're using a phone or a modem to
    make the data connection.

The price depends on the APN your phone's configured to connect to the
    internet with:

If you use the 'WAP' APN then data is charged at £5 for upto 15MB
within a day. You pay for data until you've spent the £5 (which would
be at approx. 1MB) - the next 14MB downloaded are then free.
If you use the 'Internet' APN however its £4.99/MB

Yes the above pricing is for roaming.

I think the APN you'll need for the £5 for 15MB should be:

    apn: pp.vodafone.co.uk
    username: wap
    password: wap

I dont fully know what the difference between the APN's is - you might
find that laptop access isnt possible when using the pp.vodafone.co.uk
    one?

    Sometimes that's actually more expensive.

Optus in Australia charge AUD0.022 per Kbyte on PAYG. This is on a par
with Orange's contract roaming rate of £8/Mbyte. Canada gets even
sillier with Fido's data rate of CAD0.05/Kbyte. That works out at around
£25/Mbyte. I'd rather roam with Virgin for 1/5 the price.
