After over 18 months of being told that text chat is "coming soon", 3
have finally released a version of their Skype client which supports
chat on x-series phones:
I've just updated to the new version. If I go to the Skype page linked
from the services section of my3 it still only offers me the old version
(1.0.25 for Nokia S60)
To update you need to manually go to this URL in you phone browser:
http://mobile.three.co.uk/sdf/skypeupdate - the link on that page
allowed me to download the new version (2.0.16 for S60, 2.0.33 for Java)
I quit out of Skype before downloading the new version. Upon installing
it it asked me to confirm that I wanted to replace the old version. I
then restarted Skype and it logged normally - I've not noticed any login
issues so far. However, there have been some reports of login problems
in after the update
<http://www.3g.co.uk/3GForum/showthread.php?p=387090#post387252>.
The main difference is a new chat tab in the Skype app main window, you
press right to switch to it and it lists active chat sessions. The space
taken up by the two tabs now means that you are no longer told how long
it has been since the last time the app updated it's status with the
central server.
The settings menu has a new option for "audio notifications". Presumably
this is for an audible alert when a new chat is received - however it
doesn't work on my 6120 classic. A notification of an incoming chat
message is displayed on screen (even if the Skype app is minimised) but
there is no corresponding beep. My friend running the Java version on
their Sony Ericsson Z750i has the same problem. Perhaps this is why the
new version hasn't been officially pushed out via the my3 site yet.
I haven't had the new version long enough to evaluate whether it helps
resolve my ongoing problems with the 3 Skype service(failed calls,
disconnections, presence issues, people unable to call me even though
I'm logged in and have full 3g signal). I'll post an update once I've
been running the updated app for a few days.

I had initial problems installing the new version over the existing one, I
just couldn't login, so removed and reinstalled the new version fresh and
its been running fine ever since.
I can't get audio chat notification to work either, but it does come up with
a message notification when I've minimised Skype. You can test chat by
sending a message to "Skype Test Call" which is nice.
Oh and that nokiaaddict.com site is the best ever!
