Yesterday I tried to sign-up for a new o2 account so I could get an
iPhone. The application failed the credit check. This morning on the
carphone warehouse website I went through the order process for an
iPhone on the £45/month tariff (handset free, nothing to pay up-
front). I entered all the same details I gave o2 in the shop and it
seemed to go through. I got a txt to say the order was placed & will
    be delivered tomorrow.

I assume they don't really mean this and that they will do the same
credit check as o2 and that it will fail.

Either that or I will receive the order but will not be able to
activate the phone. I'm not sure what the activation process involves.
Is it a customer approval thing or is it a technical process to setup
    the handset?

If cpw approves me does this mean they are by-passing the standard
customer checks and effectively 'underwriting' new customers to push
through as many orders as possible?

I cannot understand how CPW/TalkTalk/Fresh still have a credit licence.
My experience is that they rarely do what they say they will and with no
evidence use their debt collectors to threaten and harass you when you
owe nothing. Letters to their chief exec are ignored.
Perhaps they make their money out of people who pay what they do not owe
    for a quiet life.

Who is doing the customer approval? Is it CPW on behalf of O2? Or if
cpw say a customer is ok is that good enough for O2? Or is cpw passing
customer details on to O2 for checking? (I know cpw do the billing for
o2, not sure what that has to do with it).

I just remembered, a couple of years ago I had an 18 month fresh
contract. I only got it to get the unlocked handset and never made or
received calls on the network. Maybe that's given me a good enough
    record with cpw.

Yes, I got threatened by a CPW collector a couple of years ago for a phone
bill that I never had. Unfortunately for them, I *really* am the wrong sort
of person to try that with.

Hopefully Stephen does have his iPhone. Despite my best efforts I still
can't get CPW to sell me one!

When my local branch finally got stock on Thursday I went in to buy a
16GB version. Sailed through the credit check, and they then explained
they have to do some kind of 'Chip & Pin' test. At that point my card
failed. they tried another couple of times, and then with a different
card. All failed. They then got in touch with their IT guys who said
there was a problem with the system, and I'd have to go back the next day.

Next day they tried again and again it failed. This time they found out
it is now failing because after three failed attempts it will
automatically get rejected. They have to do some checks with my bank
which will take a month. Meanwhile they can't sell me an iPhone.

It's f**king ridiculous. I took along documents to prove my identity, my
address, that the bank account and card are mine, and that there is
plenty of money in it. Yet it still isn't enough to buy a bloody iPhone.

O2 have no stock and are closing for refurbishment. I can't order online
as there will be no-one to take delivery. Can't get it delivered to work
as I work at a large place where it's easy for parcels to go missing. I
don't live close enough to an Apple store for that to be an option right
    now.

I'm seriously hacked off with the iPhone at the moment and i haven't
    even used one yet!

It's DHL - buy one from the o2 website and when you're not in for
delivery just go and pick it up from your DHL depot!
