I've had a few duff mobiles - Sagem and Vodafone own brand - and one
good one - a Panasonic - and want in the next fortnight to once and
for all get a decent but not extravagant phone. If I list the things
that have narked me in the past, and list some things that'd be handy
that might narrow it down.

The Sagem I had was on paper great, but it was unreliable, kept
freezing and going off. Still, it had space for a micro SD card, the
ringtones weren't those tinny parping MIDI-file type. It was £30. The
buttons were temperamental. For the first couple of days it was great,
especially in that you don't have to wait too long after you've for
example pressed 3 to get a D and then need to press it again to get an
E. I know we're talking about quarter of a second pausing but txting
gets irritating if you have to do it slowly.

I prefer the single piece phone, i.e. not flip stop or slide-open.

A good 1 or 2 mp camera would be good but isn't necessary.
A slot for micro SD would be good but isn't necessary.
Don't really need blue tooth but it might prove handy.
Being able to connect it to my laptop via USB would probably be useful
especially if the SMS part of my Vodafone broadband software will work
with it when I've not got the broasband dongle going.
Some non-nauseating basic ring tones built in would be good, I prefer
something that sounds like a phone or at least makes 'pips' but not
overly synthetic ones.
The less it costs the better, but I know I needn't look at any more 30
quid phones. I looked at the Sony Erikson's and can see the keys are a
bit pants on the w200i for example.
A half decent Nokia I used for a while required me to erase txts each
time I wanted to write a new one. That may have been a fault, but I'm
wary of the Nokia brand in case it's standard.
I wouldn't by a Sagem again, and probably not a Vodafone own brand.
I'm a bloke so no pink or flowers. They look all right, funny even,
but I'm no good in a fight. Just being practical!
Last and probably most important, I need good volume without engaging
a speakerphone. My Vodafone 526 got the most amount of complaints of
not being able to hear me, and you couldn't alter the volume on that
to hear anyone better. I think they make phones like that to instil a
need in people to spend more. And it works...
I would prefer to stick with Vodafone because Stop the Clock and free
weekends is a really good deal, probably the best.

Many thanks for any response.

The Nokia 6300 is a brilliant phone, and you can get it on Vodafone PAYG
for less than £70.00 from Argos, (the cheapest I found for this model),
but it is out of stock for home delivery, and the shops seem to have an
intermittent supply if you want to pick one up, so you have to check
regularly on the internet to find out where it is in stock. It is
advertised with a free 1Gb micro SD card, but these are also out of
stock, so it is best to reserve the phone on the internet, collect it,
make sure that you mention the free SD card, and get e receipt stating
that you can get the card later if they do not have that in stock.
Ten Argos branches near me are showing it as out of stock on Vodafone,
but Vodafone stores may be doing it at £72.00 as it is £72.00 from
Vodafone online.
