Just emailed SE asking where my nearest Service Centre was, and received
    this:

"... Unfortunately we do not have any walk-in repair centres and only use a
    postal service repair centre ...
Please note that if the damage is not covered by the Sony Ericsson Limited
Warranty, there is a fee of £10.00 + VAT to have your product returned
should you not accept the estimated costs for repair ..."

Is this news to anyone here? Or did they mis-understand my question??

Well I know when the battery on my SE phone wouldn't hold it's charge
I had to send it away by post for testing and that's what they told me
    as well..It's on their website

Yes, it is, but also on their website, in several places, it suggests that
you take your phone to your nearest Service Centre, also, several people on
this group, who seem to know what they are talking about have mentioned
taking the phone (in person) to a service centre.
I was just wondering if something has changed fairly recently...

No, I found that, and it didn't work for me either. Mind you, on my
computer, at least, it says 'Australia' in the top left hand corner. If you
change ?cc=au to ?cc=uk in the URL then the page changes to 'United Kingdom'
but then the 'Service Centre Locator' option vanishes...

It's not looking good, is it?
