I can't find a cheaper provider of a roaming data service than Virgin 0.5p
per KB (although on their website they quote the price as 0.5p per Kb which
    is a bit scary).

Are there any contract plans which provide cheaper roaming rates?

Does anyone have a access to 3's special roaming charges available in some
partner network covered countries - iirc the charges are very low (can't
find any details on the website though).

and apart from Like Home, 3 is 0.3p/kB in Europe and quite a few other
    countries

I believe O2 is also 0.3p/kB in Europe

but I think T-mobile has dropped even lower than that - is it £1.50/MB
    now?

and some countries local SIMs have better prices, for example in
Germany e-plus and mvno brands on it are 24c/MB, in 10kB units

for large amounts of data, used there are add-on bundles on plenty of
foreign network SIMs, and improving all the time

Where are you likely to be roaming? I ask because I imagine there are some
overseas networks where data roaming doesn't actually work - the access
point might be there and you can send data (and maybe you're billed for it)
but nothing is ever received. I don't know if this happens for data, but I
know of at least one network where outbound SMS doesn't work (to anywhere).

I love the way they quote data roaming prices in price/KB. The Virgin rate
equates to (rounded) £5 /1MB - which aint a lot once you start checking
emails / clicking around the 'net a bit.

    Where are you going ?
I spend a lot of time working in Poland. It's very cheap to buy a block of
    900mins wifi access (15zl / c£3.80) - good coverage across the major towns /
    cities.
Worth checking the country you're visiting to see if there are similar
    available.
Or look into a local payg sim. Be aware that in some countries it can be
very difficult for non-nationals to register a payg account.
