As long as you will be operating in urban areas, Three Pay as you go
    is the one for you.

Default is flat 12 (12p per min and text) to which you can allocate
amounts of credit to convert to Stretch rates
e.g. Stretch 15 (£15 per month top up) gives you 300 mix of mins or text
and 100 3 to 3 mins, and Skype if you have a compatible phone
    using Threes Skype node.

Then you can allocate £5 per month upwards of your credit for data
which you can use for wap/gmail, and use the phone as a modem
    to a laptop, etc
(which is what i'm doing now)
I use gmail ssl settings for email, and news.albasani.net for usenet

Buy the Sim on eBay, and top up by E.top up at any supermarket

If you're not planning on using large quantities of data I'd be tempted to
    try Asda:

    8p/min UK landlines and mobiles
    4p UK texts
    20p/min international calls (to anywhere)
20p international texts (or a few pennies with a Java app like Vyke)
    20p/MB data

Buy a SIM for 50p from an Asda shop or online (don't know if they ship
internationally). If you're a heavy data user Three will win, but if you're
mainly doing calls and texts Asda will. Asda is on Vodafone's network, so
coverage should be fairly good (mostly 900MHz GSM and 2100MHz 3G).

Tesco is quite a bit more expensive, so I wouldn't use them (they've just
    retired their cheapest tariff).

If you have an address where you can pick one up when you arrive, they
    are only 50p online.

Seems foolish. I went to the local asda store and got one there and
then. Free with a £10 topup - and without a topup it won't work anyway!

Mine cost 50p from an Asda store, it had £1 worth of credit on it so I could
    use it straight away.
