I am wanting to buy a smartphone but there is a bewildering number of
choices. My requirements would include
touchscreen with ability to store "handwritten" notes or handwriting
recognition
good camera with good lens
Internet
email
GPS
PIM
Bluetooth
Wifi
ability to add programs from the net, eg google maps
big memory card
Hope somebody can suggest possibilities.

Pop into WH Smiths for a copy of "What Mobile" they have a comparison
review including the X1 (even if review is very basic)

If you are buying outright (rather than a "free" model from your phone
provider), then take a look at this bargain: http://www.expansys.com/d.aspx?i=161302

If you are prepared to compromise on the touch screen then there's only one
show in town. It puts all of the others to shame: Nokia N96. To be honest if
you use the N96 for just 20 minutes chances are you will forget about the
"need" for a touch screen. It's an amazing computer which is much, much more
than a mere smartphone.

True, but is there a need for MMS messages given that the unit has full
email and it's business use?

You'll find out when someone with a real phone sends you a MMS

I take the point about MMS though I do not use it myself. However I
really want to be able to scribble notes on the screen...reminders
etc., which I find myuch quicker than typing on small keyboard.
Soemthing like a MS Mobile version of MS Notes.

Agree. I wouldn't use a iPhone as a *real* phone. MMS's caught on a MMS
non-able phone normally have an web alternative way to read the message
anyway.
Actually, I wouldn't use any multimedia phone as a real phone unless
it's a Blackberry (who IMO have done their sums regarding reliability
and standby availability). My 8210 lasts days inbetween charges, is
smaller than the iPhone and just works. No touchscreen and the camera is
not that good.
I'm suggesting the iPhone as a possibility for the email / computer side
of things in the original request. The major downside of the iPhone is
not MMS. It's the battery life, you need to keep it tethered to a
charger daily or so - or you run the risk of it not being able to handle
important incoming calls. There also were some call quality / cell
handover issues which should have been sorted by a recent update.
The upside is the applications available and the critical mass of
business folks using it. Especially with Exchange support and Push
functionality like Blackberry does - where incoming email is announced
like SMS when it has come to your phone (transit time in whole network
end-to-end a couple of seconds max).

You have to type using the iPhones on screen keypad. It's not that bad
actually, and anyway with a pen the size of your finger - fine
scribbling is not possible anyway. You need a stylus compatible touch
screen for that.
Grab a moment in a phone shop and have someone show you. Maybe watch the
apple introductory keynote video's. Then look at the competition trying
to copy it. Will their products have any impact?
Or get a Blackberry Storm ...

Lol! Yes, it matters - as you will soon discover if you use a device that
isn't capable of MMS *data* reception. MMS allows for push reception of all
sorts of files including, through server side split file archive technology
and client side compression, Word documents and such like. MMS is arguably
good and unarguably very handy. And good value for money too.
It is generally accepted that Apple's decision to stunt the iPhone is a big
mistake. According to industry standards the iPhone is not good. My 7 year
old Nokia 7600 is better than the iPhone in this regard - I received an
urgent action split file long Word document last week via a Nokia 7600!
Can't do that with an iPhone.

He may want to do a BCC, iPhones can manage that.
