I've asked this before but I do not think I got an answer.
In the contacts list, at the bottom there is a search box.
Type in the letter "j" and you see all contacts *containing* the letter
j rather than those *starting* with j.
Is there a way to change this behaviour or better still some other way
to find contacts the way it works on my SE? There you just hold down
the, say, 5 key and the contacts list starting at J pops up. Much
faster and I do not even need to go into the Contacts application.

I don't think that's quite the way it works.
When you enter a letter in the N95's search box, it displays all
contacts whose first or last name begins with that letter. It doesn't
include those whose name contains that letter elsewhere in their name.
If you then enter a second letter, it narrows the list down to those
whose first or last names begin with those two letters.
For those contacts with spaces in their surname, it includes them in
the list if either part of the surname contains the letter(s) you
entered. For example, in my contact list, Arlene dela Cruz is listed
if I enter "ar", "de", or "cr" in the search box.

I wish it did work the way you describe.
I have 133 names none of which start with "y".
If I enter a y I get a list of 11 names which have a y somewhere in the
name.
If I then click on one of them, I get its details. At the top of the
screen it shows "43/133" with arrows to the right and left. Scrolling
left or right then shows adjacent contacts, not necessarily from the
original list (I haven't decided if this is bad or good).
If your's works the way you describe there must be some setting - which
I cannot find.

That's strange, because it's definitely the way my phone works. I've
even set up a new contact to test this. If I add "Trixie Nixon" to my
contact list and then enter a "x" into the search box it comes up with
no results. However, that contact does get listed if I enter either
"tr" or "ni" into the box.
There seems to be only one setting you can change for contacts, and
that determines whether names are displayed by first name or last
name. I have mine set to "First name Last name".
The only other thing I can think of is maybe we have different
firmware versions. I'm using the latest 30.0.018. What do you have?

OK, I think I now understand what is going on.
I have build by contacts list from an export from my PC and an import
via PC Suite.
I will in due course load several thousand names and there will be many
entries with the same last/first name. On my Palm, that I want to
replace, it also showed the address so it was easy to select the correct
entry.
To simulate that I have built a single field containing Last Name, First
Name, a dash and the first 10 characters of the address.
This is all stored in the "Last Name" field.
What seems to be happening is that it is bringing up every contact where
the first letter after a space matches the selection.
So if we have
Smith John Victor-11 River Drive
then selecting any one of S, J, V, R or D will bring up this name.
So the selection is not just on First and Last name but any individual
part thereof.

Besides the above I have two more
Last name First Name
Last nm., First Nm.
Not sure of the significance of the 2nd one above.
In my case (I only have Last name stored) all three options seem to
produce the same result.

That's what happens when you have last names with a space in them, as
I mentioned before:
-For those contacts with spaces in their surname, it includes them in
-the list if either part of the surname contains the letter(s) you
-entered. For example, in my contact list, Arlene dela Cruz is listed
-if I enter "ar", "de", or "cr" in the search box.

Download Nokia Software Updater from the Nokia web site. It will check
your phone's existing firmware and download and install any updates
that are available.

Thanks
Done that. Shows current 20.0.016 with the update version being the
same so it is offering me Reinstall.
It shows the phone as N95 8GB (RM-320)
How come you have v. 30.0.018? Different phone?

Your phone is probably branded by your network operator. You lucky mine is only
up to v14.0.001 (T-mobile).
Wish networks would stop messing, found out I can't run web runtime widgets
because my phone doesn't have the right firmaware. It is the latest I am
offered.

My N95 8GB (RM-320) isn't network branded, it's pure thoroughbred
Nokia.
Nokia Software Updater shows v30.0.018 as being the latest version for
my phone.

Is there a way to bring mine back to its senses? Will unblocking it do
the trick?

There is a way to debrand it. I don't have the URL with me, but it will totally
void the warranty. I am still undecided about trying it, but am being blocked
from running 'web runtime widgets', they were introduced at V21.
Imagine an ISP deciding if they want their customers to have XP SP3 or not.

I don't have a problem trying it.

In the manual it says that to switch between General and Silent profiles
press and hold * (or is it #?)
On mine that does not work. Is this a version issue?
